Where do the different American Indian tribes live?

What did Thomas Jefferson purchase from France that doubled the size of America?

Who explored the Louisiana Purchase?

What geographical region does this portray? What animals do you see? Which American Indian tribe used these animals to survive? Overall, what is the mood of the picture? (Hint…look at the sky.)

This woman symbolizes America. What does she resemble? What do you think is in her hands? Which direction is she moving?

Which two geographical regions does this image portray? Which tribe do these American Indians most likely belong to? What are the Indians doing? Where are they looking? What about the bear? (Look at his face, too.) Does the image seem to show movement east or west?

What geographical region is portrayed here? (hint…grassy hills, rivers, broad lowlands) What different forms of transportation do you see? What river (major transportation artery) could that be? Do you see any natural, capital, or human resources? How are the people in this image different than the previous one? Overall, what is the mood of the picture?

Who are these men? What kind of tools do they have? Why might they travel west?

Who might travel west in a wagon? What kind of dangers might they encounter along the way?

There were economic opportunities in the west. Which economic opportunity is shown here?

Pictures were painted to encourage Manifest Destiny. The picture below shows 'America' floating over the Great Plains. She brings light to the dark landscape and shows the way for farmers, travelers, the stage-coach, the telegraph and the railroad. Ahead of her wild animals, buffalo, and Indians (the darkness) turn and run leaving the way clear for settlers.

What does this painting portray? What is the artist’s message? Whom do you believe was the intended audience? What do you think Manifest Destiny is?
