THE INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION THROUGH OUTDOOR LEARNING ON STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN DESCRIPTIVE WRITING (QUALITATIVE) EVELYN PHILIP P71448

JUSTIFICATION OF TOPIC CHOSEN - The reason this topic is chosen are:- - To help uplift students’ motivation towards learning the second language through outdoor learning. - To help second language teachers and instructors to view a different perspective of teaching the second language so that teachers and instructors could gain students interest towards learning the second language. - To help broaden teachers and instructors knowledge on the methods being used to teach the second language.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM -Students’ motivation is depicted as low due to the teaching method in the classroom (Hiew 2012) which is in a confinement of the four walls and this makes students to feel bored and not motivated to learn the lessons as there is no variety in the classroom. - Besides, the teaching process in second language is also mundane as teachers are not interactive and enthusiastic in teaching as the main focus of teachers nowadays is to get over and done with the teaching hours without making meaning out of their lessons.According to Kether (n.d.) state that teachers need to vary their teaching methods and never stick to one as this would motivate students to learn. -In addition, traditional teaching methods that are commonly used in educational institutions are tedious (Boumova,2008).This is because teachers are said to have power and control in the classroom which makes students to be afraid of teachers thus making them to not ask questions in the classroom (Sherrington,2014) as compared to learning in the outdoors where students have more freedom to themselves (Council for Learning Outside the Classroom,2010).

RESEARCH PURPOSE: To see how motivation could influence learning outdoors towards students’ performance in descriptive writing. OBJECTIVES: i)To investigate the influence of the level of motivation of students towards descriptive writing. ii)To analyze students’ performance in descriptive writing. iii)To investigate the influence of the level of motivation towards descriptive writing through outdoor learning. iv)To investigate students’ performance in descriptive writing through outdoor learning. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: i)What is the level of motivation of students towards descriptive writing? ii)How is the students’ performance in descriptive writing? iii)What is the level of motivation of students towards descriptive writing through outdoor learning? iv)How is the students’ performance in descriptive writing through outdoor learning?

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:- OUTDOOR LEARNING INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (MOTIVATION) DEPENDENT VARIABLE (DESCRIPTIVE WRITING PERFORMANCE) 1.Motivates reluctant learner and adds variety to teaching and learning (Broda,2007) 2.Motivates students to have a goal orientation and the right attitude (Gardner,1985). 3.Motivate them to develop themselves as a person (The Outdoor Learning Centre,n.d.) 4.Helps improve long term memory (Rickinson et.al,2001) 5.Improves on students participation in the classroom (Stephens & Schabens,2002) 6.Reduce absenteeism in the classroom (Broh,2002). 1.Increases students achievement and reduces discipline and classroom management problems.

RESEARCH DESIGN:- Qualitative SAMPLE/PARTICIPANTS:- 100 students from the faculty of engineering in UNITEN Male:84,Female:16 INSTRUMENT: Interview questions and final exam paper for descriptive writing. DATA ANALYSIS:- Data collected from the respondents will be analysed according to the following aspect: i)Students’ opinion on their level of motivation towards writing ii)Students’ opinion on their performance in writing iii)Students’ opinion on the influence of their level of motivation towards writing through outdoor learning iv)Students’ level of performance in writing through outdoor learning
