1 PhD in Social Work and Social Policy at FPN UBG Prof dr Nevenka Zegarac Department of Social work and social policy Faculty of political sciences UBG TEMPUS SHEPSSSS Workshop 28-30 May 2015.

2 Structure of PhD Study/1 st year Oriented on methodological aspects of political sciences. The theoretical and epistemological and Methodological approaches to political sciences, and Elective package and research seminar. Research seminar is designed for all students of the PhD on constructing an argumentation. Students are being thought four argumentation: psychological, ideate, structural and institutional and they have to adopt their theses into one of the mentioned argumentation.

3 Structure of PhD Study/2 nd year More oriented on thesis that student has chosen In the Doctoral seminar, students have a task to present first draft of their ideas for PhD in front of group of colleagues and professors from the area of the topics. That way student will receive needed feedback from different angels, and that should enable them to focus on specific topic. Creating and defense critical review of the literature on the topic of the doctoral dissertation, writing and public defense of the dissertation draft application, research study work, Publication of paper as a result of Doctoral research.

4 Structure of PhD Study/3 rd year Submitting theses for review and public defense of research done by student. From elective courses: Development and behavior in the social environment ; Theory and methodology of SW; Comparative analysis of social models Social equity, participation and social change different approaches in working with different groups of disadvantaged clients: LGBT, ethnic minorities, gender etc. Every student has a task to make presentation on chosen population with main issues of that population, methods of work and data. Besides that every student needs to write an essay on exam on some of the topic teacher prepares that are being discussed during semester.

5 QUALITATIVE AND QUANTATIVE METHODS OF RESEARCHES IN SP AND SW Course objectives To enable students to gain the profound knowledge of various aspects of qualitative and quantative methods of researches in SP & SW, in order to be able to design and conduct it, and to analyze and interpret the results

6 KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING Philosophical issues and debates about Q&Q research. Define fundamental concepts of Q&Q research including: interpretation, participant meaning, and context; Understand sampling, recruitment and the ethical issues, especially with vulnerable population Identify issues of academic rigor of both approaches; Understand different evaluation models and approaches; Methodological standards used in evaluating program effectiveness; Epistemological, theoretical, methodological and ethical issues underpinning participatory and action based research;

7 APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE Study design, instrument development, data collection and analysis and writing reports; Identify the strengths and appropriate uses of Q&Q research. Use the basic methods of data collection of Q&Q research, prepare data for analysis Design and manage a research and evaluation project and responding appropriately to the questions and evaluation needs Work with research and policy practitioners in an interdisciplinary environment

8 ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS Compare and contrast the five major qualitative traditions (e.g., narrative, case study, ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology) Analyse obtained data, interpret and compare them with the existing findings Summarize, compile and report research findings

9 EVALUATION Critically evaluate obtained results in terms of their generalizability and applicability Provide constructive critiques on qualitative research issues and decisions. Critically examine existing literature with emphasis on issues regarding cultural diversity, gender, sensitive topics, and unique characteristics of clients and community
