Unit 6 Concepts: Unit 6’s Project Drafting the body of the paper Unit 6 Quiz

Concepts for the quiz Know what a paragraph is Know what order to write your paper in Know what a body paragraph is There are 2 questions about drafting Read The Key to Writing a Successful Draft located in the Reading tab in Unit 6. 3

Rough Draft of your Body Paragraphs This week you will complete the rough draft of the body of your essay and submit it to your instructor for feedback. The body draft will build on the ideas you presented in your Unit 5 Introduction assignment and make use of Unit 3 Brainstorming and Unit 4 Thesis and Outline. You will continue to take the informal information you generated and make it a more formal, finished form of writing.

Imagine that it is five years in the future. You have completed your educational program at Kaplan University and have been offered your dream job! The company or organization you will be working for wants to issue a biographical essay about you to announce that you are joining them and in what capacity. In order to do so, they need a minimum 500- word background essay from you. Your essay should include: 1. One introductory paragraph that identifies who you are, where you live, the company or organization that has hired you, and your new job title. 2. One body paragraph that gives appropriate personal details about you and your life: your age, family, hobbies, etc. (NOTE: This is a professional essay, so you need to limit personal details to only what is appropriate in the professional environment.)

3. One body paragraph that talks about your education. You should include high school or your GED, any previous college experience, and your Kaplan program. 4. One paragraph that details professional experiences, including past job experiences, honors and awards, and other related professional details. 5. One concluding paragraph that reinforces where you will be working, your job title, and what you will be doing.

Unit 6’s Project: just paragraphs 2, 3, and 4, the interior paragraphs of the essay 2. One body paragraph that gives appropriate personal details about you and your life: your age, family, hobbies, etc. (NOTE: This is a professional essay, so you need to limit personal details to only what is appropriate in the professional environment.) 3. One body paragraph that talks about your education. You should include high school or your GED, any previous college experience, and your Kaplan program. 4. One paragraph that details professional experiences, including past job experiences, honors and awards, and other related professional details. 7

First We will review the vocabulary terms from the Reading section in Unit 6.

These are the vocabulary terms for Unit 6. Body paragraph Concluding paragraph Introductory paragraph Key point Main idea Outline Paragraph topic Supporting details Thesis sentence Class, where are these terms and definitions located?

They are located in the first tab for Unit 6, List of Key Terms It’s important to read all of the posted materials for class. 10

Question Class, what is a body paragraph?

Answer Body paragraph - The interior paragraphs within an essay. Each of these paragraphs discusses a single main idea presented by the thesis sentence; this becomes the paragraph topic. A paragraph should only have one topic in it. The topic can have several parts to it but the paragraph should stick to one topic.

Question What is the concluding paragraph?

Question What is the purpose of the introductory paragraph?

Answer Introductory paragraph- The first paragraph of an essay. It starts with broad, general ideas and then works toward more specific ideas, ending with the thesis sentence.

Question What is a paragraph topic?

Answer Paragraph topic -A single main idea from the thesis that becomes the topic sentence of a body paragraph.

Question What are supporting details?

Answer Supporting details -Ideas that provide additional information about the main ideas or key points of each body paragraph.

Question What is a thesis sentence?

Answer Thesis sentence - A single sentence within an essay, located at the end of the introductory paragraph. It functions as a "signpost" to signal to the reader the main ideas to come later in the essay.

Next Now that we know the parts of an essay and what function each part plays, it’s time to look at drafting.

Writing the draft When you write your draft, you should intensely proof your work. Is this true or false? 23

FALSE!!!! The point of a draft is to get the information on paper. Worry about editing, revising, and correcting mistakes later. 24

Drafting Some writers like to put together the body of their work first, and then draft the introduction and conclusion. This inverted method allows the work to flow from the inside out.

Class, why would you write the body of the paper first and then write the intro and concluding paragraphs?

Possible answer For me, it’s easier to tailor the intro and conclusion after the body is written. Remember that the intro should cover the contents of the body of the paper. I can’t write an intro until I know everything that will be included in the body of the paper.

It’s the same with the conclusion. The conclusion wraps everything up, and how can I wrap it up if it isn’t written yet?

Other writers prefer to work from beginning to end; however, this is not required. Sometimes students think that you *must* write the first paragraph first during the writing process, then the second paragraph and so on.

However, think of each paragraph as a separate unit and you can work on each of these units in whatever order you desire. It can be in the final stages of drafting that you make connections and rearrange these units so that they fall into the logical order you established in the outline.

It doesn’t matter what style you choose as long as you write!

Case Study: Casey has to complete a report for a scholarship competition. The report is informal but must be informative and engaging. She has the main ideas for three report sections but has to draft the actual report and is experiencing writer’s block. Imagine you are Casey. Using a topic of your choice, you will work in seminar to apply drafting techniques to develop the ideas for the report. We will also examine how we make the informal writing of the pre-writing more formal in the draft.

Question Class, what are some things that Casey can do to overcome her writer’s block and start to write her paper? What do you do to get yourself motivated and started?
