Success is being able and willing to achieve academic and social outcomes (goals). These are set for each individual student by the school to help the child reach his/her full potential as independently as possible. Please remember that as a parent/guardian you play a critical role in your child’s educational success story! Here are some of the things that we do at the classroom level to help children reach their potential. Learning Strategies and Adaptations – Educational Assistants, Literacy Intervention, Individual Adult Support, Differentiated Instruction, Universal Design, Backwards Design, Multiple Intelligences, Interest Inventories, Clear Goals, High Expectations, Assessing and Monitoring Progress, Chunk and Check, Ensuring Student Understanding, Wait Time, Adaptation Plans, Individual Education Plans, Educational Support Team Meetings, Encourage Risk Taking, Manipulatives, etc. Promoting Positive Behavior – High Expectations, Clear Goals, Restitution, Conflict Managers, Guidance Counsellor Sessions, Social Skill Groups, Code of Conduct, Movement Breaks, Sensory Strategies, Fidget Toys, Building Relationships, Consequences Relating to Behavior, Positive Reinforcement, Humour, Time Out, Buddy System, Conflict Resolution, Student Involvement in Goal Setting, Immediate Feedback, Promoting Student Responsibility, Proximity and The Look, Behavior Plans, Team Approach, Belonging School Goal, Teaching Recess Games, Programs and Activities – Educational Assistants, GROW(eg. smaller groups), Intramurals, Noon Clubs, Voluntary Choir, Special Interest Clubs, Cross Grade Buddies, Run, Jump, Throw, Kids in the Kitchen, Transition Days, Student Led Conferences, I Love to Read Month, Jump Rope for Heart, School Wide Activity Days, Environmental Focus, Special Jobs, EAL Programs, Volunteers, Library

Liaison Workers – provide a vital communication link between the school and home for many families. They assist both the school and families with language issues, orientations and transitions, interpreting, providing for some basic needs and in other areas as well. Resource Teachers – work collaboratively with the rest of the school team and also other support services to ensure that each child receives the educational program they require for a successful school experience. (eg. Individual Education Plans, Behavioral Plans, Adaptation Plans) English as an Additional Language Staff - help students learning English adapt to a new language and acquire new skills in and out of the classroom. They work with small groups or individuals rather than with an entire class. Guidance Counsellors – work with children who need support with social and emotional skills. They are trained to help students in many areas and work with individuals, small groups and also with whole classrooms. Principals – work with everyone to ensure that students, parents and staff are supported in their successful educational journey. They are here to help people where they can and must ensure that individual success for each child becomes a reality. Speech Language Pathologists – assess basic language articulation and language skills for many students even though their main role falls into the next layer of the circle.

Divisional Specialists – are staff that work in all of our schools and provide a level of support that the school teams cannot provide Psychologist –provides specific information about a students learning needs, social skills and mental health issues. Speech Pathologist – assesses and provides programs for children with either articulation or language needs. As mentioned on the previous page they also work in the schools regularly with more routine programming and assessment. Student Services Coordinator -oversees all staff helping children with special needs and ensures that appropriate programming is in place. Health Care Specialists – are professionals contracted by the school division to help program for some children. URIS nurse -provides specific plans and training for staff working with children who have medical concerns. Occupational Therapists - provide life skills and fine motor assessment and programming for children. Physical Therapists - provide assessment and programing for children who have gross motor skill concerns.

Manitoba Education and Training- provides consultants to schools who are specialists in their area of study. (Eg. Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Autism, Vision) We access their skills on a regular basis depending on a child’s needs. They also provide specialized training to our staff for issues that are ongoing or have become an issue at the school for a variety of reasons.
