Knowledge Organisation Competency Survey ISKO SG – 11 March 2016 Matt Moore Patrick Lambe

Agenda Knowledge Organisation Competency Framework (KOCF) - Background Knowledge Organisation Competency Survey – Results Questions

Knowledge Organisation Competency Framework (KOCF)

Who developed the KOCF? Patrick Lambe Founding Partner, Straits Knowledge Visiting Professor, KIM PhD programme, Bangkok University President of the International Society for Knowledge Organization Singapore Chapter Matt Moore Senior Consultant, Panviva Lecturer, University of Technology Sydney

KOCF was developed for Innovations in Knowledge Organisation, Singapore, 2015 Conference

Why was the KOCF developed? Given that the world of Knowledge Organisation is changing, can we try to map out what competencies Knowledge Organisation professionals need to do their job today? “This competency framework is intended to provide a simple self- assessment tool for practitioners working with Knowledge Organisation Systems (KOS) to identify their areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. It is indicative rather than exhaustive and we expect it to be developed further over time.”

Basic Understanding = I have an understanding of the concepts at work here (e.g. academic study or peripheral involvement in a project) but I have not successfully undertaken this activity. Undertaken Successfully = I have successfully undertaken this activity at least once. Undertaken Repeatedly = I have successfully undertaken this activity multiple (more than 3) times. I may coach others in how to undertake this activity. Developing & Innovating = I regularly undertake this activity and have developed new tools and techniques to improve its efficacy.

Knowledge Organisation Competency Survey

What did the survey ask of respondents? To self-assess themselves against the 26 elements of the framework. Which competencies are you most interested in developing over the next 6-12 months? (Do not choose more than 3). What is the best way for you to develop the competencies you have indicated? Which competencies would you be willing to help others with, through knowledge sharing or coaching? Only indicate competencies where you marked yourself as "Undertaken Repeatedly" or "Innovating“ Also role and location.

Who responded to the survey? 138 respondents. Many different job titles: Taxonomist, Knowledge Manager, Indexer, Content Strategist, System Analyst, Data Librarian, Molecular Researcher.

A Word of Caution “I don't really know what a knowledge organisation system is”

Expected if evenly distributed

Questions

1.How do the collective assessments of the respondents match with your experience? i.e. Are some of these topics irrelevant to you? 2.What are the existing avenues for competency development? How effective are they? 3.If they are ineffective, what can be done to improve them? What is currently missing? 4.Given the imbalance in numbers between novices and experts, what role should professional associations such as ISKO play? 5.Given the competency distribution gap, what should be the role of universities? 6.What are the opportunities for different service providers (e.g. universities, associations, private trainers, consultants)? 7.Which other groups do knowledge organization professionals need to reach out to?
