What did you learn about this country that you did not know before? What would you like for others to know about this country? I learned that Haiti is a francophone and that it occupies the western 1/3 of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola the other 2/3s are occupied by the Dominican Republic. I also learned that just like the French the Haitian people love food and some traditional rural foods are yams, corn, rice, bread, and coffee. Some treats are sugarcane, mangoes, and sweetbread. Most people are impoverished in Haiti because of overcrowding and because of the 2010 earthquake that killed 316,000 people, injured 300,000 people, displaced 1.3 million people, it destroyed 97,294 houses, and damaged 188,383 houses. The Citadel or the Citadelle Laferrière,in Haiti was built by Henri Christophe, with the purpose of protecting Haiti from attack. Jean- Jacque Dessalines allowed Henri to construct the Citadel. It was built to maximize the use of defensive artillery and to provide enough water supply for 5,000 men. This is a picture of the Citadel today.
