Genesis 2:4-25 God’s Design For Marriage

Genesis 1:26–27 (NIV84) Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God (neither male or female – the LORD has both qualities) created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Genesis 2:4 (NLT) “This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth. When “L ORD God” made the earth and the heavens…”

Exodus 3:14–15 (NLT) “God replied to Moses, “I A M W HO I A M …This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.”

“These are the generations…” 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. 10:1 Now these are the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth…” 37:2 These are the generations of Jacob. (11:10, 11:27, 25:12, 25:19, 36:1, 36:9)

Vs neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the L ORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. 6 Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land.

“Canopy Theory”

Vs. 7 7 Then the L ORD God formed the man (Heb. “adam”) from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living “soul”.

“Clay” Genesis 3:19 (NLT) “…For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.” Job 33:6 (NASB95) “Behold, I belong to God like you; I too have been formed out of the clay.

John 9:6–7 (NLT) Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the clay over the blind man’s eyes. He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!

Genesis 1:27 (NASB95) God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Vs Then the L ORD God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there He placed the man he had made. 9 The L ORD God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground— trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden He placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Revelation 2:7 (NIV84) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Revelation 22:1–2 (NIV84) On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations… Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations…

Revelation 22:12-14 (NIV84) “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.

Vs A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches. 11 The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. 12 The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. 13 The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush. 14 The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates.

Vs “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you will surely die.” 15 The L ORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the L ORD God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you will surely die.”

Vs “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” But still there was no helper just right for him. 18 Then the L ORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the L ORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

“It is not good for the man to be alone” “a helper who is just right for him” (To help is to give assistance or aid, to not hinder. Not inferior or of lesser value – just “supplying what is lacking”), aiding and supporting him as his friend and ally. Psalm 46:1 “a very present help in trouble.”

Proverbs 31:12 (AMP) "She will comfort, encourage, and do him only good as long as there is life within her."

Vs So the L ORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the L ORD God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the L ORD God made a woman from the rib, and He brought her to the man.

1 Corinthians 11:8–9 (NIV84) For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

Vs “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’ ” 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. 25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

“Adam was expressing a tremendous excitement, a joyous astonishment. (Dr. Ed Wheat) “I have finally found the one who can complete me, who takes away my loneliness, who will be as dear to me as my own flesh. She is so beautiful! She is perfectly suited to me. She is all I will ever need!”

Ecclesiastes 9:9 (NASB) Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun. Prov. 5:18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth.

“This explains why a man leaves his father and mother”

Matthew 19:3–6 (NIV84) 3 Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for any reason?” 4 “Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’ 5 And he said, ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’

"Cleave" “To adhere, to stick to, to cling to, to be attached by some strong tie, follow close and hard after, be joined together, keep fast, overtake, pursue hard, take, catch by pursuit (suggests some determined action is required) to cement or weld together so that the two cannot be separated without damage to both.”

Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 (NIV84) Two are better than one Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: 10 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
