FOLK TALES What is the difference between a folktale, fable, fairy tale, tall tale, legend, urban legend, parable… etc?

There are many similarities and they don’t neatly fit into 1 category. Well… There are many similarities and they don’t neatly fit into 1 category.

Folktale: story created by common “folk” (umbrella term)

Folktales… Are nonreligious Entertainment value as well as for teaching values Magic happens but is not the focus Common everyday heroes

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm -lived in Germany -1700s 1800s

Fairy Tales A fanciful tale of adventure featuring magical creatures, usually intended for children.

(often these are American) Tall tales A greatly exaggerated story that on the achievements of an incredible hero. (often these are American)

Legends A traditional tale handed down from earlier times and believed to have an historical basis.

Fables/ Parables a short moral story

So what IS the difference? Parables often use humans Fables often use animals

Urban legends Stories involving unlikely contemporary incidents which have an element of credibility. Urban legends are spread through mass media. Razor blades in Halloween Candy????
