Jesus Teaches His Disciples at The Last Supper Luke 22:22 – 38 Presented by Bob DeWaay March 14, 2010

Luke 22:24 And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. They look for status honor in the context of a feast

Luke 22:25 And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.” Disciples should not be concerned about status honor

Status issues and conflicts at meals Lk. 5:29-32 Jesus eats with sinners Lk. 7:36-50A sinner weeps on Jesus’ feet Lk. 11:37-52Jesus rebukes Jewish leaders at a meal Lk. 14:1-11Jesus heals on a Sabbath at a meal and teaches them not to seek honor Lk 15Jesus is accused of eating with sinners and gives 3 parables

Disciples are to serve, not to seek status Luke 22:26 But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.

Jesus served them Luke 22:27 For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Luke 22: You are those who have stood by Me in My trials; and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Israel will be restored and Jesus will reign as King

Luke 22:31, 32 Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Satan has permission to attack Peter

Luke 22:33, 34 But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.” Peter has unrealistic self-confidence

Luke 22: And He said to them, “When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” And He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.” From now on the situation will change

“Must” = dei “divine necessity” Luke 22:37, 38 “For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘And He was numbered with transgressors’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.” They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Applications and Implications 1) We must reject status honor in favor of concern for the needs of others 2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers

1) We must reject status honor in favor of concern for the needs of others 1Peter 5:1a, 2, 3 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you,... shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.

1) We must reject status honor in favor of concern for the needs of others 1Peter 5:5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers Job 1:6, 12 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.... Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers 2Corinthians 12:7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me to keep me from exalting myself!

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers 2Corinthians 12:8, 9 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers 1Kings 22:19, 20 Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left. The Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab to go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said this while another said that.”

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers 1Kings 22:21, 22 Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord and said, “I will entice him.” The Lord said to him, “How?” And he said, “I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.” Then He said, “You are to entice him and also prevail. Go and do so.”

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers Jude 1:8, 9 Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties. But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers Zechariah 3:1, 2 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers Zechariah 3:3, 4 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and standing before the angel. He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.”

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers Revelation 12:10b, 11 Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.”

2) Satan needs God’s permission to attack believers Romans 8:33, 34 Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
