Harcourt Lesson 2 Day 1

Free powerpoint template: 2 Listening Comprehension You will listen to a biography, a true story about the life of a real person. A biography includes: - information about why the person is important. - opinions and judgments based on facts. - Events from the person’s life, told in time order.

Free powerpoint template: 3 When listening to a biography, you should listen to find out why the person is important. This biography is about a famous woman swimmer. One purpose for listening is to find out why this swimmer was so remarkable.

Free powerpoint template: 4 As we read let’s also think about being fluent readers. Good readers read each word accurately when reading aloud. Remember that when you come to longer words such as delicatessen, you should pay attention to syllables and letter patterns to help you read the words accurately.

6 Comprehension Turn to page 54 of your reader. Do I have a volunteer to read the paragraph? Remember, a character’s motives are the reasons the character acts as he or she does. A character’s traits can provide clues about the character’s motives. The setting of a story can affect the character’s actions.

Free powerpoint template: 7 Now, look at page 55. Who would like to read the paragraph in purple? Even though her brother disapproved, Amy stilled saddled her pony and went riding. This action shows that Amy is determined to ride. Can anyone identify an action that shows that Amy is strong-willed? I would like for you and your partner to re-read the paragraph and identify how the setting affects Amy’s thoughts and actions.

Free powerpoint template: 8 Story Structure Remember that story structure is the way a story is organized. Characters, setting, and plot are the most important story elements. Sometimes a story’s setting has an effect on the characters and plot events. Thinking about story structure can help readers follow story events.

Free powerpoint template: 9 The passage we are about to read describes an event in the life of a real person, but has all the elements of a fiction story. In the 1930s, girls had few opportunities to play on sports teams. The time in which Dottie lived forced her to be strong, creative, and determined. She decided to play softball any way she could – even if it meant joining an all-boys team.

Free powerpoint template: 11 Read the rest of the story and we will fill in the story map. Story Map Characters Setting Plot Events

Free powerpoint template: 12 Now, I’d like for you and your partner to think about a story that you are both familiar with. Create a story map like we just made about the story. Think of a new setting for the story and discuss how the story would be different in that setting.

Free powerpoint template: 13 Vocabulary Let’s check out our new vocabulary words on our chart then I will ask a question to see if you understand. Who is an example of a legendary sports star? If you muttered something, how did you say it? If you gaped at something, how did you feel when you saw it?

Free powerpoint template: 14 What might cause you to flinch? How would you feel if you hear some kids snickering behind your back? What might cause you to glare at someone in a library? How stunned would you be if your best friend suddenly moved away? If a cook flipped a pancake and it landed on someone’s head, would that be a fluke? Why or why not?

Free powerpoint template: 15 Now, let’s look at vocabulary in a story Turn to page 56 and 57. Read these 2 pages to yourself. Now, let’s do our special reading on page 56. What do you think Walter was feeling when he glared at Rodney? Why was Rodney legendary in the table tennis club? Do you think Rodney heard what Walter muttered? Why or why not?

Free powerpoint template: 16 Let’s continue our special reading on page 57. How do you think Walter felt when Rodney gaped at his shot? Why did Walter flinch after Rodney’s second serve? Why might Rodney think that Walter’s first return of serve was a fluke? Do you think that Rodney continued snickering as the game went on? Why or why not? Why was Rodney stunned at the result of the game?

Free powerpoint template: 17 Stations Today we will try Stations for the first time. We need to think about a few procedures and rules before we begin. The most important thing to remember is to stay on task at all times. I will be busy with a small group and it is extremely important that we ALL do our very best ALL the time.

Free powerpoint template: 18 Use this time to do your work and do NOT disturb anyone else, including Mrs. Martin. If you need to tell me something, please write a note to me on a sticky note and place it on the pink poster board by the door. I will read them and help you later.

Free powerpoint template: 19 STATIONS Everyday each group will read, write, and meet with me. We will also have an extra station that will change. On Mondays, we will some type of word work, usually working with spelling. Tuesdays, will be working on Fluency and Thursday will be technology.

Free powerpoint template: 20 You will have directions for each station and they should be self- explanatory. I will explain each station before, but if you have questions, you should be able to read the instructions for yourself.

Free powerpoint template: 21 What at Weekend! Our writing assignment on Mondays will always be about something that happened over the weekend. It doesn’t have to be anything exciting, but it needs to be about one specific things – not just a list of things that you did over the weekend. For example, let’s read about my exciting event over the weekend about Ping Pong.

Free powerpoint template: 22 Transitions Transition periods are when we go from one station to the next. We have to remember that we go quickly, quietly and orderly to our next station. It is important that we waste no time.

Free powerpoint template: 23 Daily Proofreading Rewrite these sentences correctly in your BEAR book. babe Ruth’s real name. Was George Herman Ruth. Do you know how many seesons he played.
