Reviewing the Worksheet Get out your “Charting the Data” worksheet We will go over this worksheet as a class

Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet Question 1 How many columns do you think are needed for an experiment with: 1 Responding variable - 2 Columns 2 Responding variables - 3 Columns 3 Responding variables - 4 Columns 5 Responding variables - 6 Columns You will always need one more column then you have responding variables… that extra column is for the manipulated variable 1 mark each for a total of 4 marks

Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet Question 2 Under which heading in a formal lab report would you place your chart? Charts/Tables are always placed under the observations section of your lab report because that’s where you record your observations 1 mark each for properly identifying the right heading

Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet Question 3 a Amount of Nitrogen Fertilizer added (lb.) Total length of the grass after 1 week (cm) mark for proper & complete title 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of spaces…11 And 1 mark for the proper increments entered into the spaces 1 mark for proper & complete title 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of columns

Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet Question 3 b Length of pendulum string (cm) Number of cycles the pendulum swings through in one minute mark for proper & complete title 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of spaces…10 And 1 mark for the proper increments entered into the spaces 1 mark for proper & complete title 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of columns

Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet Question 3 c Amount of food supplement fed to fish (mg) Weight of fish (g) Length of fish (cm) mark for proper & complete title 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of spaces… 6 And 1 mark for the proper increments entered into the spaces 1 mark for proper & complete title for both columns 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of columns… 3

Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet Question 3 d Amount of phosphorus added to crop (lb.) Height of crop (cm) Time to maturity (Days) Yield at time of harvest (kg) mark for proper & complete title 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of spaces… 5 And 1 mark for the proper increments entered into the spaces 1 mark for proper & complete title for both columns 1 mark for proper units identified 1 mark for proper number of columns… 4

Give your self a mark out of 33 and a % score The teacher will walk around and have a look to see how you did Remember, if you are not happy with the mark that you ended up with, come see the teacher after school or at lunch to get further help!!! Reviewing the “Charting the Data” Worksheet

GRAPHING the DATA Identify all the necessary components of Graphs Extrapolate information from graphs Create our own graphs based on a data set

What a Graph Needs Before you get started on plotting your data your graph needs the following: A title Both of the axis need titles complete with UNITS!! Evenly spaced intervals between number values on the x and y axis

Main Title for your Graph Graph Title The title should be very descriptive. Titles on graphs are more like sentences A good way to lay out your graph title is to start with… “The Effect that _____________ has on _____________” You can get the info to fill in the blanks from the problem you identified EXAMPLE “IF” I add fertilizer to my lawn, “THAN” the grass will grow twice as long in one week Title should be something like… THE EFFECT THAT adding fertilizer HAS ON the length that the grass grows in one week

Variables & Axis on the Graph It is important to know which variable is which when it comes to graphing your data? Depending on which variable you are talking about will affect which axis that variable will be presented on in the graph. The MANIPULATED VARIABLE will always be put on the X-AXIS The RESPONDING VARIABLE will always be put on the Y-AXIS

Titles for the X & Y Axis X & Y Axis Titles Both of the axis need titles The titles must be complete with units!!!! When creating increments on your axis for numbers it is important to remember that the increments must be evenly spaced (USE GRAPH PAPER IF YOU CAN) Why is it important to have evenly spaced number values along the axis? NOTE The graph should be able to stand alone and the reader should still be able to understand what the experiment was about

Always a Line Graph Line Graphs For the purposes of our grade 8 class, we will always be plotting our data using a line graph

Plotting a Graph as a Class This test consisted of feeding lab rats different amounts of protein bars each day. The rats were all fed different amounts of the same type of bar for 15 weeks from birth. They were then weighed to check for overall body mass. These were the results… Weight of protein bar fed each day (g) Final body mass of the lab rats (g)

Extrapolating Info From a Graph Look at the graph below, I want you to tell me (and record in your note books) what the test was about, what the responding variable was, what the manipulated variable was, and what the Conclusion might be?

Extrapolating Info From a Graph Marks will be awarded for identifying these types of key trends

The Curve of the Graph The curve or shape of the data after it has been plotted is important If the data spikes, if it is a strait line, if it levels off after rising… all of this is important to note in your conclusion Visualize what the curve is saying about that data and then explain it in your analysis

Graphing Exercise Go through the following work sheet and complete the graphing exercises You must work alone on this assignment Ask for help if you need it and refer back to your notes as much as you need
