Dual Power What do you think this term means? What effects you think this may have on Russia? What is the context of this situation in Russia?

After the Fall of the Monarchy Dual Government The Provisional Government The Petrograd Soviet

Your Task Write and deliver an “on the scene” news report from Petrograd in spring of You need to include… -Who is in charge (is this clear?) -What problems will they face? -Interview with either a member of the Petrograd Soviet (e.g. Trotsky) or the Provisional Government (e.g. Prince Lvov), explaining their attitudes. What problems did the Provisional Government face? What problems did we identify last lesson? What have we learnt since that has either a)Solved these problems or b)made these problems worse What do you think is the biggest problem facing the PG at this time and why?

Problems facing the Provisional Government Land: Peasants demanded it! – Govt promises land reform without a date to deliver Hunger: The workers in the cities were demanding food – Govt could not guarantee food supplies as Soviets controlled the railway The war: People demanded an end to the war – Govt promised one last offensive to win the war Revolutionaries: how to stop their influence spreading! – Govt promised political reform to win support from masses but failed to take any positive action. Elections for constituent assembly promised for November The Army: Needed loyalty of the army – Troops in Petrograd now under control of Soviets & refused to obey the govt. Order number One gave PS great deal of control over troops High Expectations? Some change but not fast enough?

Using Pages Why were the Bolsheviks in a stronger position in October 1917, than they had been in Feb 1917? 1) The Bolsheviks are now armed and seen by many as heroes after crushing Kornilov revolt 2) Bolsheviks are now stronger in the Moscow soviet (and others) after successful elections. 3) Increased support after propaganda and own newspaper (Pravda) 4) Promises made to the population “Peace, Bread and Land.”
