“Formative Assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes.” Council of Chief State School Officers, FAST SCASS

Highlights Participants 3 high schools in western Iowa 1 high school in eastern Iowa + 1 high school in southeastern Iowa 5 total high schools Plan 2 CEU credit course following the Iowa Professional Development Model 5 ICN sessions 3 on-site workshops/meetings for planning Learning Teams meeting at least once per month

Key Issues: Ensure that the learning team is a part of the building and district professional development plan and is based on the Iowa Professional Development Model.

Challenges: Scheduling Sustainability Scaling up –within school and beyond Connecting to more explicit training in instruction Connecting to other state-wide high school initiatives

How many and what percent of teachers in each building are involved in the initiative? What percent of the student population is participating in classrooms that use formative assessment? What is the level of implementation each month by teacher and building? What is the balance between formative and summative assessment by building? How has student perception of the class changed? How has teacher assessment practices changed? How has formative assessment impacted student achievement?
