Color Looking at Art Using the Elements of Art

Primary – red, yellow, blue Secondary – green, violet, orange Tertiary – mix a secondary and primary that are next to each other on the color wheel.

Complementary – colors opposite each other on the color wheel. When placed next to each other, makes the other stand out. (Red-Green) Analogous – colors next to each other on the color wheel; are harmonious; work well together.

Hot/warm colors – red, orange, yellow. Tend to stand out; evokes a certain feeling or emotion. Cool Colors – greens, blues, violets. Calming, serene feel.

Hue – identifies a color, tells you what it is. Intensity – the brightness or dullness of a color. Value – the range of darks and lights. Tints – lighter values of a color. Shades – darker values of color. Use complementary color to create a darker value. Use of black or brown dulls color. Monochromatic – tints and shades of one color.

Look at the following artworks and write down how artist used color in each art work. Vincent Van Gogh used complementary colors to make the stars stand out. They contrast the blues used throughout the rest of the painting.

Edvard Munch

Claude Monet

Paul Cezanne

Elements of Art Texture in Art

Texture can be created by the use of line, how you make your pencil marks.

Texture can be made using pen and ink. Again how you make your marks.

Cross hatching – parallel lines, crossed with parallel lines. The closer the lines are together, the darker the value the lines create.

Stippling – making dots with either pencil or pen. The closer the dots are placed next to each other, the darker the value is.

Texture can be created using various materials, collage.

Surfaces of paintings can vary with texture – some paints are applied evenly; whereas, some are painted with heavy, thick brushstrokes.

Sculptural work depends very heavily on texture. The artist chooses certain materials to use in order to create this texture

Shape in art Organic and geometric shapes

Henri Matisse use of organic and geometric shapes Geometric shapes are shapes that are identifiable They have a name, such as triangle, square. Organic shapes are ones that are more free form, they can not be identified by a name. Can you identify any organic shapes in Matisse’s above art work? Any geometric shapes? What do you think this is an artwork of?

Pablo Picasso Cubism – breaks down objects into simple shapes, from various views. What subject matter (object) is this an artwork of?
