CUEGIS Change Culture Ethics Globalization Innovation Strategy

Examination In paper 2, Section C you will be asked to assess an organization of your choice (that you will study throughout the semester) with reference to one of the CUEGIS concepts. See example exam questions on page 559 (first column) in your textbook.

Change Organizations are constantly having to change. Managers must ask: Why is change needed What do we hope to achieve by such change? Who is affected and how are they likely to react? How will we know it’s been successful? Read the case studies on pp. 560-61 for examples of organizational change.

Culture Shapes the values, beliefs and customs of people. Creates norms for an organization, country or social grouping. Watch these clips to gain a better understanding of the importance of local knowledge for multinational companies: http://goo.gl/eOatfd (1 min) http://goo.gl/mjXTtl (1 min) Watch this clip from National Geographic about cultural differences: http://goo.gl/umPbt (5 min) Read the examples of questions at the top of the second column on page 561. What do all the theorists listed on page 561 have in common? They are all from the USA – how does this impact their views? Language differences also exist as part of culture.

Ethics Socially accepted moral principles that guide decision-making, based on the collective belief of what is right and wrong. Look at the ethical case examples on page 562 break into groups of 2 – 3 and teacher assigns a case to each group Take 5 minutes in your group to read the case and discuss the ethical implications Discuss each case as a class Read the case studies on page 563.

Globalization Provides opportunities & threats for an organization (external forces that can help or hinder a business). Read through the bullet points on p 564 of examples.

Innovation Can empower and create success for a business. Creating new ideas or reinventing existing ideas. Applies to all aspects of business activities. Read case study on p. 565

Strategy Devising plans to achieve the long-term goals of an organization. Three stages: Determine the current position of the company (where they are now) Determine the desired future (where they want to be) Determine the path to get the organization to where it wants to be (how do they get there) Read exam tip on p. 566 (second column)

Classwork This is homework if not finished in class. Choose an organization (can be local, national, international) Go back to p. 559 and pick one of the bulleted questions from the first column to answer in relation to your organization of choice. Type up 2 – 3 paragraphs that answer the question. Keep in mind that this is what you will be doing at the May exam for Section C of paper 2. You will have studied the organization throughout the semester and will be much more prepared than you feel doing this practice run. Just do your best to answer the question. As we go into each section throughout each module you will be asked to think about the CUEGIS concepts as they relate to each topic. Keep the CUEGIS concepts in mind throughout the duration of this course.
