Reputations change depending upon WHO you ask. Reputations change depending upon WHEN you ask the person. In history people also have different reputations. These are called interpretations.

If you think that Keira Knightly looks somewhat familiar you are not alone. The 17 year old British actress starred in the first Star Wars prequel as Princess Amidala’s decoy double and apparently looked so much like her co-star Natalie Portman that even Portman’s mum couldn’t tell them apart. The Teddington school girl has only just completed her GCSEs, but has already starred in Hollywood blockbuster, The Hole, as well as Star Wars Episode One. Her latest movie, due out later this year, is Bend it Like Beckham, in which she plays football mad Jules, an 18 year old intent on making it big in the world of women’s football. And it has just been announced that she will be playing the female lead in ITV’s lavish remake of Dr Zhivago, a role made famous by Julie Christie in David Lean’s 1965 classic.

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. “The country will now enjoy my protection and will be quieter since I will keep the nation from being covered in blood.” Cromwell

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Oliver, we want you to be our new King ! It’s thanks to him that we have overcome our enemies. We look forward to peace under his leadership. Oliver Cromwell is a good man. He has led us through the Civil War, one of the most dangerous times in our history.

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Between 1649 and 1660 England had no Monarch - the country was a Republic. Oliver Cromwell controlled the army and was the most powerful person in England. He was named Lord Protector. Historians disagree about Cromwell’s personality. Some think he tried to grab too much power crushing everyone who disagreed with him. Others say that he was trying to find a better way of governing the country. By 1661 Cromwell was dead, parliament had declared him a traitor and his body was dug up and hung. At last Oliver Cromwell is getting what he deserves? Based upon this information what did people think of Cromwell in 1661? Why may people have changed their minds about him?

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. In her book, Cromwell – Our Chief of Men, the historian Antonia Fraser gives evidence from the 1650s that suggests people saw Cromwell as a saviour after the nightmare of Charles I and Civil War. “He was man that the country could rely on. A man that would not let the English people down. He was a man who would put the needs of his country above his own needs and never be a tyrannical king!” (A. Fraser – pp. 328) What is Fraser saying about Cromwell’s personality?

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Fraser also gives this quote from Cromwell before he became Lord Protector... “I am neither executioner or heir to Charles I. I would run this country with fairness, equality and will bring peace to the whole kingdom. History will look back at my actions with fair thoughts and kindness.” Speech to Parliament, 1651 Class Vote - Is Antonia Fraser correct in her view that Cromwell intended to run England fairly as Lord Protector? YesNo

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Look at the SOURCE PACKS on your desk. They contain evidence that will help you decide whether Oliver Cromwell deserves the reputation as a hero or a villain. The evidence is in random order at the moment. In groups read each source and ask the teacher about any words that you don’t understand. Think about the following... What different ways could we sort the evidence? Can you sort the evidence into different groups? Is the evidence useful for discovering more information about Cromwell’s differing reputation? Now sort the information into ‘Hero’ and ‘Villain’ categories and complete the chart that you have been given.

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Having looked at the evidence do you think that Antonia Fraser is correct in saying Cromwell always intended to act as a fair ruler? turning points Can you identify any turning points in Cromwell’s behaviour as Lord Protector? (When did he start acting more harshly?) Can you suggest any reasons why some people in the sources might have negative opinions about Oliver Cromwell? (Look at the different types of people who Cromwell attacked.)

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Micheal O Siochuru I completely disagree with Antonia Fraser ‘Oliver Cromwell deserves his title as a villain of British history. His treatment of the Irish was scandalous, his abuse of the Catholic faith unforgiveable and his repression of the English people unacceptable.’

All of you All of you will be able to explain who Oliver Cromwell was. Most of you Most of you will be able to identify two different opinions about Oliver Cromwell. Some of you Some of you will be able to evaluate why people have different interpretations of Oliver Cromwell. Where do you stand in this argument? What is your key evidence? Cromwell was a hero rescuing England from the Royal Family. Antonia Fraser Cromwell was actually a villain who was just as bad as King Charles I. Micheal O Siochuru Whatever we might decide today! By 1661 he was branded a traitor, his body had been dug up and his head displayed for all of the country to look on in shame! Homework: Do you think Oliver Cromwell was a hero or a villain? Use your knowledge to write a few paragraphs explaining your answer. Try to support your comments with evidence.
