Oliver Cromwell controlled the army and was the most powerful person in England. He was named Lord Protector. Historians disagree about Cromwell’s personality. Some think he tried to grab too much power crushing everyone who disagreed with him. Others say that he was trying to find a better way of governing the country. By 1661 Cromwell was dead, parliament had declared him a traitor and his body was dug up and hung. At last Oliver Cromwell is getting what he deserves? Based upon this information what did people think of Cromwell in 1661? Why may people have changed their minds about him?

In her book, Cromwell – Our Chief of Men, the historian Antonia Fraser gives evidence from the 1650s that suggests people saw Cromwell as a saviour after the nightmare of Charles I and Civil War. “He was man that the country could rely on. His treatment of the Irish was scandalous, his abuse of the Catholic faith unforgiveable and his repression of the English people unacceptable.’
