EXODUS B.C.

Chronological Assignment for Exodus See handout. Do Passover assignment. Go over events, using time lines.

Israelites as Slaves in Egypt (Ex. 1) Joseph and his brothers died, but there were many Israelites living in Goshen, an area of land in Egypt. A new king came in to power who didn’t know about Joseph and put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor. Pharaoh ordered the midwives to kill all boys born to Israelites, but they feared God and didn’t do this. Finally, Pharaoh ordered that every Israelite boy that is born must be thrown into the Nile River.

Moses...birth – marriage and son (Ex. 2) Moses’s mother put him in a basket when he was three month’s old and put him in the Nile to save him. Pharaoh’s daughter finds him and gets Moses’s mother to nurse him. Pharaoh’s daughter takes Moses as her son. Moses = “one who draws out”…She drew him out of the water. Moses grows up and sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave. Moses kills the Egyptian. This make Pharaoh mad, and he wants to kill him, so Moses flees to Midian. Moses rescued seven women at a well (daughters of a priest of Midian - Jethro). Moses lived with them and married Zipporah. Jacob met Rebekah at a well. Moses and Zipporah had a son – Gershom = “alien” or “stranger.”

Moses and the burning bush (Ex. 3) God appears to Moses in the form of a burning bush. He tells him that he will lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Points to remember… 1.Holy ground 2.God’s name “I Am” 3.Expect rejection 4.Keep hoping…God will keep his promise

Moses as a leader…(Ex. 4:1-17) Signs for Moses to use: 1.Staff – snake 2.Leprous hand 3.Water turns into blood Moses’s excuse: Can’t speak well (fear) God: Who made you? Why does he question God? Aaron – Moses’ brother who speaks for him Moses’ sister – Miriam Moses’ son – Pallu Moses’ Hebrew mother - Jochebed

Moses goes to Egypt…(Ex. 4:18-23, 5, 6:1-12) God’s ultimatum: Let my people go or I will kill your (Pharaoh’s) son. Pharaoh during this time – Amenhotep II Moses approaches Pharaoh. Pharaoh refuses and takes away straw for the Hebrews to use to make bricks. They have to find the straw themselves and produce the same quota or be punished…impossible. This makes them resent Moses. God encourages Moses and tells him to try again. Moses again questions God.

Moses tries again…(Ex. 7:1-13) God keeps telling Moses that he will fail, but eventually he will succeed. He must keep the faith. Moses continues to question. Foreshadowing: Jesus told the disciples that he would have to die but would rise again. They kept questioning him and even forgetting that he said it.

Plagues (Ex. 7:14-32 through chapter 11) 1. Blood (Moses turned the river into blood, but Pharaoh’s magicians did the same. Pharaoh didn’t listen.) 2. Frogs…magicians did the same. 3. Gnats…magicians couldn’t do it. 4. Flies (Pharaoh said he would allow Israel to sacrifice within Egypt but later changes his mind.) 5. Livestock plague 6. Boils 7. Hail 8. Locusts 9. Darkness (3 days) 10. Death of Firstborn

Passover The Angel of Death would pass over a house of there was lamb’s blood on the door…death would not come upon the oldest in the household. Pharaoh’s house and many Egyptian houses lost their oldest children. Passover is the modern Christian holiday that corresponds with Passover…symbol – Christ’s blood covers our sin…pays for our sin with His blood. How do Jews celebrate the Passover today?

The Exodus (Ex. 12:31-51, 13) Pharaoh allows them to leave. 6,000 men besides women and children Baked cakes of unleavened bread (no yeast) because they were in a hurry to leave (Lord’s Supper). Israelites lived in Egypt 430 years. They take Joseph’s bones with them (Ex. 13:19). God led them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night.

Pharaoh changes his mind…(Ex. 14) He goes after them and terrifies the Israelites…Moses reassures them…God will protect. Angel of God shielded the Israelites and gave them light while he gave Pharaoh’s army darkness. Moses parted the Red Sea…Israelites walk across on DRY land. Pharaoh’s army is allowed to follow…swallowed up. Exodus Gods and Kings (2 hrs. 20 min.)
