Blackshaw Primary School

 DfE – statutory assessments:  Reception – Baseline, EYFS profile  Year 1 (and 2) - Phonics Check  Year 2 and 6 - end of Key stage assessments  Other assessments:  Ongoing assessment  N - Y6, Termly data check-points, all curriculum areas  Y1 – 5 Annual progress tests (English and Maths)

 Alongside the introduction of the new National Curriculum, levels have been removed for all year groups  No levels for any year group from September 2015  At the end of KS1 and KS2 pupils will be given a scaled score and a ‘performance descriptor’ against the expected standard  Children in Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 will be assessed using the golden codes from our assessment programme SPTO and assessed against the national curriculum objectives for their age group

 Your child’s teacher will use a combination of the EYFS profile and the new baseline  assessment to measure your child’s progress.  Baseline:  The baseline assessment will result in a score that forms part of your child’s baseline profile.  By having a good understanding of your child’s abilities when they start school, your child’s  teacher will be able to measure their progress  The baseline assessment is an online assessment supported by the teacher  EYFS Profile:  The EYFS profile assessment is carried out in the final term of Reception  The main purpose of the EYFS profile is to provide a reliable, valid and accurate assessment of  individual children at the end of the EYFS.  EYFS profile data is used to  inform parents about their child’s development against the early learning goals (ELGs) and  the characteristics of their learning  help year 1 teachers plan an effective, responsive and appropriate curriculum that will  meet the needs of your child

 The Phonics Screening Check demonstrates how well your child can use the phonics  skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify students who need extra  phonics help.  The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read oneon-  one with a teacher. Non-words (or nonsense words, or pseudo words) are a  collection of letters that will follow phonics rules your child has been taught, but don’t  mean anything.  The 40 words and non-words are divided into two sections – one with simple word  structures of three or four letters, and one with more complex word structures of five or  six letters.  Your child will be scored against a national standard, and the main result will be whether  or not they fall below, within or above this standard  Children who do not meet the required standard in Year 1 will be re-checked in Year 2.

 Both Year 2 and Year 6 will complete a reading test, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test (SPAG) and a Maths Test and they will also be assessed on their writing

 The National Curriculum has set out objectives for each age group  Teachers use these objectives to plan, teach and assess against  Our online tracking system SPTO allows teachers to assess whether your child is meeting these objectives  Assessment is continuous – Teachers will assess before during and after lessons through questioning, discussion, observation, peer & self assessment and marking and feedback focussed around clear learning objectives taken from the National Curriculum  All this information will feed into termly assessments on our tracking system

 Termly data check-points… Emerging, Developing, Secure…  In order to assess which stage your child is working at, your child’s teacher takes into consideration the amount of knowledge, skills and understanding your child has confidently demonstrated from the programme of study for their year group.  For example children who have achieved approximately 50% of the objectives in the Year 5 writing programme of study will be said to Y5D for writing (Year 5 Developing).  It is expected that most children will reach secure by the end of the year. (Age related expectations).

 Each Golden Code is Worth one tracking point. Children are on track if they move on three tracking points in a year

Progress can be monitored from one School Year to the next: ◦ A pupil who is secure at end of one year may be expected to be secure at the end of the following year. ◦ A pupil who is Above ARE at the end of one year would be expected to be Above ARE at the end of the next year We can plot the progress of each pupil to track children who are not making as much progress as their previous assessment data suggests. For example if Jane was recorded as Above Age Related Expectations at the end of Year 2, and Above at the end of Year 3 but is only Inline at the end of Year 4 we would want to find out why

 The new National Curriculum includes the requirement for children to be able to apply their learning in new and exciting contexts therefore deepening their learning, before moving on to new learning.  If your child is working above the standards expected for their age group they will be completing work which will allow them to master the objectives and work with greater depth. This means they will be expected to apply their knowledge and reason further to deepen their understanding  Children who are working below the expected standards will be tracked according to the Year group they are working on. For example a Year 5 child who is still working on Year 4 objectives may be Y4D.  Intervention is put in place for any child who is not making progress

 Parent’s Evening twice a year  Termly Reports  Optional weekly ‘drop-ins’  SPTO  Annual Reports  Annual progress tests and statutory assessment outcomes (Y1, Y2 & Y6)

 The grading on the reports reflects where your child is in relation to meeting the standards for that age group  For example – Now at the end of Spring, your child would be on Y (age group) developing (e.g. Y5D). This means they would be B on the report  If the were emerging now they would be below (e.g. Y5E) – C on the report  Any child working on other year group objectives would be D – well below  A child could also be above at Y5S (secure) – A
