We hope to... Provide you with a greater understanding of how mathematics is taught in school. - Show you the progression of the 4 operation methods through Key Stage 2. - Enable you to see the types of different questions children are asked in their assessments including Year 6 SATS. - See the importance of mental maths skills and the strategies children are taught. - Help you understand how you can help your child at home.

4 Operations: Written

Addition – Upper KS2 Column Method: This method remains efficient when adding larger numbers and decimals. It is a quick and reliable method = 478

Subtraction Subtraction – Lower & Upper KS2 Column Method – Decomposition: How would you do = Children must keep being referred back to place value – it is 3 tens not just 3.

Multiplication – Lower & Upper KS2 Grid Method: 6x25

Multiplication – Upper KS2 Short Multiplication for 2-digit x 1 digit: 43 x 6 = x This method is the next step on from the grid method

Mental Calculations Each week the children have a mental calculation lesson where they are shown and get the chance to practise mental calculation strategies. They learn strategies such as ‘re ordering’ and ‘partitioning’ How would you re order this to make it easier to calculate? =

Your turn A school buys some yo-yos as prizes. The yo-yos cost £4.25 each. The school has £40 to spend on prizes. They buy as many yo-yos as they can. How much money is left? Don’t forget informal jottings are encouraged so feel free!

Emily chooses two numbers. She adds the two numbers together and divides the result by 2. Her answer is 44. One of Emily’s numbers is 12. What is Emily’s other number? KS2 level 4 I had one pound. SATs Children who start Year 6 in September2014 will be the last to take Key Stage 2 SATs in their current form, before they are overhauled for summer These SATs have already undergone some changes, with the aim of making them fairer for all children.overhauled for summer 2016 In 2011, a review into primary school assessments recommended a greater focus on the progress children make throughout the school year, as opposed to a test-day snapshot of what they know. It also highlighted the value of teacher assessment (after all, who knows your child better than their class teacher?).

All Year 6 children are required to take externally-set assessments in English and maths. The standard papers cover levels 3-5, with level 4 being the expected national average at the end of primary school. Occur in May. All children sit the Level 3-5 paper. Children will complete a mental paper and two written papers. Both written papers will be non-calculator. Children will have already attempted past papers so use to the format. Some children will sit the two Level 6 papers (non calculator).
