Trade for Sustainable Development – T4SD Standards Map

What is the International Trade Centre – ITC ? ITC mission “ITC, as an agency of the United Nations, enables business export success globally by providing, with partners, trade development solutions to the private sector, trade support institutions and policy-makers” The UN body for design of policy recommendations to achieve economic and social development through trade and investment. The forum to negotiate multilateral trade rules, monitor their implementation and handle trade disputes ITC works with local and regional institutions and business stakeholders to build trade capacity.

6 Participation rules Participation in T4SD is free of charge for all standards initiatives that meet the following criteria: (i)Existence of a published set of criteria & indicators; (ii)Existence of an implementation system that is operational or nearing operational status; (iii)The requirements include criteria that address at least one dimension of sustainable development (social justice, protection of the environment, economic development). Main output of T4SD A Global Database that contains information on the scope of each standard (product/geographical scope), the requirements, the verification/certification process, the governance, the standard-setting & review policies, monitoring and evaluation processes as well as research materials.

7 Data Quality Protocols Neutrality, credibility & confidentiality 1.Information is entered in T4SD Global Database by ITC staff; 2.External experts are mandated by ITC to quality control the information; 3.Each standard organization gets an access to the database to review the data; 4.Final discussions and sign-off on the data. Ownership, update & maintenance T4SD operates as a central repository of information, the data is owned by each standard and can be modified – corrected – updated at any time; Quarterly updates of information in T4SD database; Yearly full review of the information in T4SD database. 12 T4SD Standards Map – Self-Assessment Building on Standards Map: A new tool for SMEs to assess their situation vis-a-vis standards, codes and audit protocols (gap analysis) – Offline Prototype in XLS

Technology: Currently in MS Excel, the prototype of T4SD Standards Map self-assessment tool will be turned into an online application in Q3/Q4 2013; Data: The tool is based on data exports from the T4SD Standards Map Database; Flexibility: Allows the user of the tool to customize weightings based on his/her own preference in order to assess its self-assessment the standards: e.g. Critical requirements versus Recommendations / Explicit reference or No explicit reference of the issue in the standard, etc; Key functionalities: The user defines the baseline reference; Calculations are made to determine level of correspondence and overlap with selected standards and codes; Tables and graphs are automatically generated in the tool. 13 T4SD Standards Map – Self-Assessment
