LINEAR PERSPECTIVE

What is Perspective? Perspective - The technique artists use to project an illusion of the three- dimensional world onto a two- dimensional surface. Perspective helps to create a sense of depth — of receding space.

What is Perspective? Linear Perspective – A system of drawing or painting in which the artist attempts to create the illusion of spatial depth on a two- dimensional surface.

Looking from Perspective

The Ground Foreground: Part of a two- dimensional artwork that appears to be nearer the viewer or in the front. (PINK)

The Ground Middle-ground: Area of a two- dimensional work of art between foreground and background. (BLUE)

The Ground Background: The part of the picture plane that seems to be farthest from the viewer. (GREEN)

Deeper into Perspective Two Dimensional (2D): Having height and width, but no depth; flat. Geometric Shapes - including circle, ovals, triangles, rectangles, squares, etc.

Deeper into Perspective Three Dimensional (3D) - Having, or appearing to have, height, width, and depth. Geometric Forms - Examples of geometric forms include spheres, cones, cylinders, pyramids, and cubes.

How we See it! Depth - Actual or perceived 3 dimensional space. The apparent distance from front to back or near to far in an artwork.

How we See it! Proportion - A principle of design, proportion refers to the comparative, proper, or harmonious relationship of one part to another or to the whole with respect to size, quantity, or degree; a ratio.

Perspective Terms & Types Horizon Line - A level line where the sky and earth appear to meet. Vanishing points are usually found on this line. The horizon line can change based on the perspective of the eye level.

Perspective Terms & Types Vanishing Point - In linear perspective, a position on a horizon where lines or rays between near and distant places appear to converge (come together). In order to produce an illusion of depth in a two-dimensional representation of space, artists sometimes use one, two, or more vanishing points.

1 Point Perspective One-Point Perspective is a form of linear perspective in which all lines (describing straight edges that go from points nearer to points farther) appear to meet at a single point on the horizon.

2 Point Perspective Two-Point Perspective is an application of linear perspective in which all lines (representing straight edges that go from points nearer to points farther) appear to meet at either of two points on the horizon.

Aerial Perspective VS. Aerial View Aerial Perspective - The perception of depth in nature can be enhanced by the appearance of atmospheric haze. Aerial perspective is the portrayal of that atmospheric haze -- one means to adding to an illusion of depth in depicting space on a flat surface. Atmospheric haze: most commonly humidity (or cloudiness), it could be rain or snow, smoke, or any other kind of vapor.

Aerial Perspective VS. Aerial View Aerial perspective is achieved by using less focus, along with bluer, lighter, and duller hues for the distant spaces and objects depicted in a picture. *Be careful not to confuse aerial perspective with aerial view.

Aerial Perspective VS. Aerial View Aerial View - Seeing from a point of view at a great height, also called a “bird's- eye view”.

Aerial Perspective VS. Aerial View Any picture in which the horizon line, and consequently the vanishing point (-s), have been placed near or above the top of the work, this applies to renderings of any subject, but most often to landscapes, cityscapes, etc. Be careful not to confuse aerial view with aerial perspective. “Aerial View of the Chrysler Building” Matthew Daniels

Eye Level View Eye Level View: An imaginary horizontal line that is even with the height of your eyes. Eye Level View.

Worm’s Eye View Worm’s Eye View : a perspective seen from below or from a low or inferior position.
