SCD Monthly Projects Meeting 2014 Scientific Linux Update Rennie Scott January 14, 2014

What is Scientific Linux and Scientific Linux Fermi? Overview of SL/SLF What have we done in the last two years? Future plans – Redhat/CentOS Announcement

What is Scientific Linux and Scientific Linux Fermi? Scientific Linux is a “binary” compatible rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions. Scientific Linux Fermi is the version of Scientific Linux that includes Fermilab exclusive configuration files. The goal is to provide a stable Linux based computing platform to the HEP community with an emphasis on long term compatibility.

Scientific Linux Team Lead developer: Connie Sieh Developer : Patrick Riehecky Project developer and sysadmin: Bonnie King Group Manager: Rennie Scott

So, what’s new? (Infrastructure) Updated the distribution architecture –  Upgraded all OOW hardware  Placed all systems in a cluster behind the F5 load balancer  Segregated BlueArc traffic to a separate network interface  Configured Puppet to manage the infrastructure Redesigned build environment  Virtualized the build and test systems  Retired and replaced OOW servers  Fixed many lingering build issues and work arounds  Puppet now manages all of the build server configurations Bonnie King  Trained in building errata and can provide some SL dev backup  Can do small short term development projects  Provides documentation and diagraming of current processes

So what’s new? (Quality Assurance) Errata Database  Provide automated verification, consistency and tracking of errata packages. (SL Developers currently manage the interdependencies of over 1700 security errata packages). repoclosure  Does automated resolution of package interdependencies during the release cycle. Automated RPM Patching  Program which provides automated SL customization of RHEL packages, including text, license, and logo modifications.

So what’s new? (Documentation) Began an intense effort to document build and internal procedures and place them in RedMine Created diagrams of complicated procedures Created instructional presentations on tools used in SL development:  RPM  Revisor  Mock  Koji

So what’s new? (Documentation) Errata Build Process diagram

So what’s new? (Communications) COMING SOON:  New Scientific Linux Website  New Scientific Linux Fermi Website

New SL Website (In Development)

So what’s new? (Tools & Products) Updateinfo – a client-side tool for the tracking and auditing of errata packages. It uses information contained in the errata database. Devtools: Includes the latest gcc compilers  Devtools 1.1 – gcc 4.7  Devtools 2.0 (coming soon) – gcc 4.8

So what’s new? (Tools & Products) Software Collections  Newer versions of development software. These are installed alongside system versions and can be accessed and controlled via system commands  MariaDB 5.5  MySQL 5.5  Node.js 0.10  Perl 5.16  PHP 5.4  Postgresql 9.2  Python 2.7  Python 3.3  Ruby 1.9.3

The Future of SL/SLF SL/SLF7 – RHEL 7 beta was released  December 11, We are currently building the release and have filed over 30 bugs so far with Red Hat. Red Hat / CentOS announcement  Tuesday January Red Hat and CentOS announced that they would be joining forces.  We are continuing to gather information and analyze what the full impact of this will mean for Scientific Linux & Scientific Linux Fermi.
