UCAS & SIA What’s Fabrication ? Manufacturing is the production of merchandise using labor and machines, tools, chemical and biological processing, or formulation. [wiki]

UCAS & SIA What’s Fabrication ? Manufacturing = Fabrication = produce = make... Industrial Production ≈ Manufacturing industry ≈ Mechanical Manufacturing Mechanical Fabrication

UCAS & SIA Fabrication : A Systematic View

UCAS & SIA Fabrication : A Systematic View Fabrication Process : technologies and methods used to define how products are to be fabricated. [wiki]

UCAS & SIA Machining 3D Printing … Fabrication process Fabrication : A Systematic View control

UCAS & SIA Fabrication : A Systematic view And 3D printing is nothing special!!!

UCAS & SIA 3D Printing 3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes.[wiki] Conventionally, a desired product is decomposed to be several components (or parts), then fabricate each one individually, and finally integrate them. So “additive process” is as old as fabrication. Analogically, 3D printing can be regarded as assembling micro parts while conventional methods assemble macro ones.

UCAS & SIA What Characterize 3D Printing Analogically, 3D printing can be regarded as assembling micro parts while conventional methods assemble macro ones. Geometric complexity free

UCAS & SIA What Characterize 3D Printing 3D printers equip us with unprecedented control over the geometry and material of product. And 3D printing is the most talented one!!!

UCAS & SIA The limited capability of traditional fabrication methods constraints our designing. Casting In The Age of 3D Printing: Design

UCAS & SIA The limited capability of traditional fabrication methods constraints our designing. L shape part In The Age of 3D Printing: Design

UCAS & SIA Traditional CAD systems create shape use processes like extruding, revolving and sweeping, etc.. In The Age of 3D Printing: Design Extruding Revolving Sweeping

UCAS & SIA The endless capability of shape and material will free our imagination and product’s functions Classical CAD tools are not capable to keep pace with the new design space created by 3D printing. In the age of 3D printing, we need more powerful tools to visually realize our idea. In The Age of 3D Printing: Design

UCAS & SIA In The Age of 3D Printing: Simulation For fabricating a specified product, we need to determine what fabrication parameters are most suitable, i.e., design of fabrication process. Bad parameters, such as high laser power for SLS, will cause cracking, deformation and unsatisfied mechanical properties.

UCAS & SIA In The Age of 3D Printing: Simulation The core issue is the coupling interaction between heat and stress ModelHeat simulationStress simulation

UCAS & SIA In The Age of 3D Printing: Other topics Optimization of building orientation Path direction Slicing direction Optimization of supports …
