Campus Art Collection: Open to All Carol MacDonald Saskatchewan Library Association Conference May 11, 2014

The University of Regina has maintained an extensive art collection since it’s earliest days as Regina College Original bequest by Norman MacKenzie formed basis of the MacKenzie Art Gallery collection. The President’s Art Collection has expanded and includes a variety of artwork in different media The University believes the collection, maintenance and display of art enhances the University environment by reflecting culture, provoking thought and providing enjoyment for all who work, study and visit the campus

President’s Art Collection Primary focus: works produced by current or former faculty and students of the U. of R. Secondary focus: work of artists and artistic movements either having a significant influence on or having been significantly influended by artistic developments at the University of Regina Works outside these foci normally aren’t given priority (Shumiatcher donation an exception)

President’s Advisory Committee on Art Reviews proposed donations and purchases Promotes the collection through innovative programs and commissions of art Ensures maintenance of an inventory of art works under PACA’s collection criteria Obtains appraisals and insurance coverage Supervises work of Curator/Preparator & student curators Develops policy and procedures for the acquisition, de- accessioning, maintenance, installation and location of art Hires Curator/Preparator and Student Curator assistants

Administration of President’s Art Collection The University of Regina Library took over administrative responsibility for PACA and the art collection in 2011 Chair appointed by the President’s Office Chair holds regular meetings with Committee comprising representatives from: -President’s Office – consultation with president -External Relations – donor relations -Facilities Management – art location and installation -Supply Management Services – issue appraisal requests -Financial Services – donor receipts and art insurance -Visual Arts – advice on acquisitions/donation proposals -Director, MacKenzie Art Gallery –advice & collaborative projects including purchase of art from trust fund -Representative for the Arts Community - advice

Use of the Collection: Primarily intended to enhance the environment for those studying, working in, or visiting the University As much of the collection should be viewed as possible to enrich the campus community Provide access to the collection as a teaching resource Works may be lent to other institutions for exhibitions

Challenges of Campus Wide Display of Art No art gallery display space Art in hallways and public spaces gets damaged Staff move art installed in meeting rooms and offices and don’t inform PACA Donors donate large pieces too large to display Donors offer art that doesn’t meet collection criteria Staff inadequate to manage growing collection until hiring of full time Curator/Preparator

Exhibitions: Annual exhibitions at the President’s residence -Shumiatcher donation highlights 2015/ th anniversary of the University 2014/15 -Indigenous Art 2013/14 -Women artists 2012/13 Homecoming Exhibition, Shumiatcher Exhibition at the MacKenzie Art Gallery, September, 2015
