LIFE AS A MEDICAL STUDENT Abby Besch, MS1

 After the application  Choosing a school  The summer before you start  First Day!  Classes  Schedule  Studying  Fun?  Life after medical school  Questions OUTLINE

 Interviews held August through April  Expect to hear back 6-8 weeks after the interview (UB tells you the next day!!)  If on waitlists, send letters of intent  If accepted, send in deposit to hold spot, cancel any interviews if you want  Must choose one school by May 15 th  Can get accepted off waitlists up until August YOU APPLIED, NOW WHAT?

 Program  Location  COST!!!!!!!  Research/study abroad opportunities  Atmosphere CHOOSING A SCHOOL

 Enjoy!!!!  You finally don’t have to worry about applying to medical school anymore  Find an apartment  UB Housing weekend- In beginning of June to show you apartments, look for roommates, meet your classmates  Accept Financial Aid  Arrange a budget, pay tuition Medical school is expensive!!! UB is $27,000 a year, private schools up to $60,000!!!! SUMMER BEFORE YOU START

 Start around middle of August  Lots of fun!  Orientation week at UB  Learn about school, picnics, formal dinner, bar night, etc.  White Coat Ceremony FIRST WEEK Geneseo Represent!

 1 st Year:  Gross Anatomy Lecture and Lab—TOUGH!  Fundamentals 1 (Cell Bio, Molecular Genetics, Cancer)  Fundamentals 2 (Biochemistry, Nutrition, Medical Genetics)  Fundamentals 3 (Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology)  Histology (tissues/cells under microscope)  Musculoskeletal system  Renal system  Gastrointestinal system  Clinical Practices of Medicine, aka CPM  Learn to take a history and physical exam  Use fancy equipment ($$$)  Assigned a family medicine preceptor CURRICULUM

 2 nd Year:  Cardiology  Nervous system and neurological anatomy  Pulmonary  Endocrine and Reproductive System  June- USMLE Step 1  3rd Year: Clinical rotations  4 th Year: Rotations, mostly electives  Residency Interviews  USMLE Step 2  MATCH DAY! CURRICULUM

 Biochemistry- definitely will help with all of first year  Genetics  Cell Biology  Anatomy  Immunology  Anything you like! Medical school is ALL science! WHAT CLASSES IN GENESEO SHOULD I TAKE?

 8:00-9:00 Lecture  9:00-10:00 Small group/PBL/Histo/Path Lab  10:00-11:00 Lecture  11:00-12:00 Lecture  12:00-1:00 Usually FREE LUNCH!  1:00-3:00 Relax/exercise/nap  3:00-6:00 Study  6:00-8:00 Dinner/TV  8:00-11:00 Study  **UB has an awesome schedule with classes usually only in the morning DAILY SCHEDULE

 Transition to electronic notes and textbooks  Many have iPADs  Otherwise have to pay for notes  Need to keep up with lectures  Learn hundreds of pages of notes a week  Cramming as last resort, will need the info on boards and during rotations  Textbooks not necessary!  Except Anatomy and Histology, don’t really need to buy textbooks, can be used as a supplement HOW DO I STUDY IN MED SCHOOL?

DO MED STUDENTS HAVE A LIFE?? YES!!!!!

 Residency (3-7 Years)  Usually decide by end of 3 rd year which specialty  Some are very competitive:  Orthopaedics  Dermatology  Neurosurgery  Ophthalmology  Emergency Medicine  Otolaryngology (ENT)  Plastic Surgery  Radiation  Radiation Oncology  Need to do research, amazing board scores, good letters of rec.  ****You are not guaranteed to become a certain type of physician! LIFE AFTER MEDICAL SCHOOL

 Fellowship (1-2 years)  Subspecialize  Optional but becoming more and more popular  Attending Finally!  Total # of years:  4 undergrad  4 medical school  3-7 residency  1-2 fellowship  Total: years!!! LIFE AFTER MEDICAL SCHOOL

 UB is awesome!  “Cheap” tuition  Great professors  Don’t have to go to class!  Tons of research possibilities  UB 2020  New medical school opens in 2016!  New vascular research institute just opened UB PLUG
