10 Revision Strategies to Help You Learn

Revision Strategy 1: KWL grid KnowWant to knowLearn Most volcanoes occur along plate boundaries Lava and ash from volcanoes can cause major disasters There are different types of volcano Why do people live near volcanoes? What is a super volcano and what would happen if one erupted? Can you predict when a volcano is going to erupt? Volcanic soil is very fertile so that’s why people live near them. In this column you write down the things you already know. Linking topics together is a powerful way to learn more effectively. In the W column you can put what you’d like to know. Use the specification to help you with this. In the L column you record what you have learned – answers to your questions in the W column. You need answers to all of them.

Revision Strategy 2: Vocab building Do I just sit here and remember them all? Use them in context. Give yourself 5 key terms. Now challenge yourself to write a paragraph using all the terms at least twice.

Revision Strategy 3: Exam practice Know your command words and practise answering them. Outline? Describe? Explain? Compare?

Describing and Explaining This is assembly has about 190 students in sat on chairs facing the main stage. The students are listening to two main speakers; Miss Kavanagh and Mr Baker. The students entered the hall well and continue to listen to the information being presented to them. This assembly for Year 11 is being given because it is vital that all students are properly prepared for the examinations which lie ahead. The students enter the hall well because they understand the school’s expectations of them in this situation. The topic of revision is something all Year 11s need to know about therefore Miss Kavanagh chose it as the topic.

Revision strategy 6: Flow diagrams These work well for revising processes and sequences, for example remembering the steps in a Science experiment or the sequence of events leading up to the Nazis’ election victory for History.

Revision Strategy 7: Past Papers You need to know where they are! Key ones are on the school website d=69813 How to revise with past papers? 1.Do it in timed (and exam) conditions 2.Check your answers against the mark scheme. 3.Make a list of what you need to do better. 4.Start using one of the other strategies to improve on what you know.

Revision Strategy 8: Taking better notes Topic and date Write your main notes here. It is a small space so they must be condensed. Write a summary of what you have learned. Write 2 exam questions you might be asked. Use this space to write down key words, big ideas or key questions. Do this using SQ3R

Revision Strategy 9: SQ3R Survey – take an overview of what you’ve read. Skim. Read the first paragraph or chapter. Read the chapter headings. Read the last paragraph or chapter. Question – As you are surveying ask questions. Why is this important? How does this help me achieve my goal? Why do I need to know this? Read – As you read search for answers. Don’t stop to make notes. Recall – Once you’ve read a section. Pause. Ask yourself your key questions. Make some notes. Answer your key questions. Review – Cover your notes and in your head go back over the answers to the key questions.
