Jesus The Teacher

Jesus the Teacher Rabbi = Jewish term for teacher Where did he teach? Synagogues Private Homes Fields Hillsides Roadways Everywhere and to Everyone

What Did He Teach? Law Taxes Marriage Divorce Family Inheritance Mystery of Suffering Importance of the Commandments

Jesus Was Authentic Instructed more by his deeds (actions) than his words. He was Genuine. Teaching of Love The highest love that we can do for one another is lay down our lives for that person.

Jesus Pursued People He actively taught people no matter where he was or who the people were.

Jesus Loved Life and Related to the People on their own Level Jesus went to a wedding feast and enjoyed himself. He then performed his first miracle. He loved to eat and drink

Jesus used Colorful, Down-to-Earth, Language But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing. (Mt 6:3)

Jesus Spoke with Authority Jesus did not quote anyone! Rabbi’s of the time would often quote prominent teachers to back up their positions. AMEN Amen means “certainly” in Hebrew. Used at the end of an oath. Jesus Used Amen at the beginning of his words to strengthen it. “Amen, amen, I say,,,”

Jesus Was a Brilliant Debater Jesus was a clever teacher People tried to trap him in his stories Example: Jews were expected to pay a coin tribute to the Roman emperor as a tax. Jews hated paying it. One day the Pharisees approached Jesus with the question, “It is lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? If Jesus said no … Jesus would be seen as preaching a rebellion If he said Yes … He would lose face with Jews who hated the tax

Jesus Answer Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs with God.”

Jesus Taught With Parables Parable – A typical teaching device Jesus used. It is a vivid picture story drawn from ordinary life that conveys religious truth, usually related to some aspect of God’s Kingdom. It teases the listener to think and make a good choice about accepting the Good News of God’s reign.

Why Parables More interesting Memorable Easy to commit to memory Taste and look at reality Mystery

Do You Know Any Parables?

Reflection What qualities made Jesus an excellent teacher? What today would make an outstanding teacher?

Assignment Read ten of Jesus parables and decide what one you like the most. Why do you like this parable the most? What spoke to you? Explain.
