Unit 4: The Person of Jesus What is authority? What sort of people have authority? Name some, in order of most to less authority. What makes people listen to “authority”?

AUTHORITY You accept someone’s right to tell you what to do or believe, because you recognise their greater power/ knowledge/ wisdom. You obey this authority, as you recognise that it will be for your own benefit. Where would you put Jesus on the list of different authorities you made?

1 st Titles of Jesus: “Teacher” & “Miracle Worker”

Jesus did not do miracles to show off his power. He was called “Teacher” (Rabbi) because everything he did, like his miracles, were meant to help people understand and accept his teaching: -To prove who he was – Son of God with authority over nature, sin and death - so you can have faith in Him -To prove that his message was for real: -care for others – cure sick people, provide for their needs (multiplication of loaves) etc -fight against evil – casting out devils 1.Explain what it means to say that Jesus has authority over nature, sin and death 2.How did working miracles give authority to his teaching? 3. Give an example of a miracle Jesus did that taught something - about who He is - about what his message is (eg love or care for others) **Which of Jesus’ miracles teach us most about him?

Jesus as Teacher and Miracle Worker 1.Look up the references in your gospel, and complete the table **Why was Jesus called “teacher” rather than “mighty one” or “wonder- worker” when he did miracles? *Draw pictures to illustrate some of the evidence

Mark 4:35-38 Calming of the Storm But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are going down?” Mk 5: 35 Healing of Jairus’ daughter …there came from the synagogue leader’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” Mk 9:2-5 Transfiguration And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah Mk 10:17,20 Rich Young Man And as Jesus was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Mk 12:13-14, Paying Taxes to Caesar And the Pharisees came and said to him, “Teacher..is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Mk 14:12-14 Passover: man with water jar Follow the man with the water jar, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”

In non-Christian Roman, Greek and Jewish sources at that time, Jesus is called “Wonder Worker” rather than “Teacher”. Why would non-Christians describe him in this way more?
