Peter’s Denial of Jesus John 13:31-38 I am not!

“Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you!” (Matt. 16:22) “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!” (John 13:37) “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away!” (Matt. 26:33)

Jesus says that the time of glorification is here (31), so I will only be here a little while. (33) Like I told the Jews, I am going where you cannot come. I give you a new commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. (34) Peter asks, “Lord, where are you going?” (36) Jesus answers, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” Peter said, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!” (37) Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, Truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me there times.” (38)

John 18 Jesus is betrayed and arrested (18:1-11) Jesus faces Annas (18:12-14) Peter denies Jesus (18:15-18) Jesus faces Annas; sent to Caiphas (18:19-24) Peter denies Jesus, twice (18:25-27) The rooster crows (18:27) Jesus faces Pilate—and denies nothing (18:28-40)

1.Servant Girl: You’re not one of this man’s disciples, are you? “I am not.” (18:17) 2.Those around the fire: You are not one of his disciples, are you? “He denied it, and said, “I am not.’” (18:25) 3.A relative of Malchus: “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” Peter again denied it. (18:27)

What can we learn from Peter? 1.You’re not as strong as you think you are. 2.You’re not as weak as you fear you are. 3.Your God is greater than you think he is.
