Hazard ratios were derived from Cox proportional hazards regression models including serum selenium levels as a continuous variable. Hazard ratios were adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, family income, menopausal status, cigarette smoking status, serum cotinine level, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index, and vitamin and/or mineral supplement use. Results for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were further adjusted for C-reactive protein level, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, glomerular filtration rate, and diabetes mellitus. The area of each square is proportional to the inverse of the variance of the log hazard ratios. Horizontal lines represent 95% confidence intervals. None of the interactions was statistically significant except for the interaction of serum selenium levels and smoking status on all-cause mortality (P <.001) and the interaction of serum selenium level and age on cancer mortality (P =.02).
