PRO, p.161  An executed murderer will never murder again.  An executed murderer will not be able to enjoy life.  An executed murderer will not have to be supported in prison with tax money.  Execution sends a strong message to others that murderer will be punished.

Con, p. 161  It teaches people that forgiveness is unnecessary.  An innocent person might be executed by mistake.  Poor people and minorities are executed more often than whites  Execution costs more tax money than keeping a person in prison for life.  People can change for the better while they are in prison, and execution takes away this hope.

Focus on Writing 1. Wayne Paulson was the kind of guy that was never noticed at school and never got in trouble. 2. Since the police came to his house and arrested Wayne for murder, his life has never been the same. 3. Because Wayne was found guilty at the end of his trial, he was given the death penalty. 4. Wayne said that he is innocent, but the jury didn’t believe him.

5. Although his life in jail is very different now, Wayne still remembers his life before jail. 6. Wayne’s mother doesn’t want him to feel lonely, so she visits him almost every day. 7. Some prisoners like Wayne are able to leave prison if they get new trials. 8. Wayne asks about getting a new trial when his lawyer visits him.
