Identification of the Web site goals or purpose Understand who will use the Web site Understand what Web technologies you will use Identify the content owners and authors Decide what and where information will go on the Web site Planning

Identify the tasks users need to complete Identify information useful to the user Consider the processes required to support Web site features One of the more important phases in the Web Development Life Cycle Analysis

Determine the purpose of the Web site Define how the pages will be organized Select appropriate structure Determine if the site will include: multimedia, forums, e-commerce ability, etc. Address accessibility issues and design for an international audience Determine how to provide site navigation Design and Development

Types of Web Site Organization Linear Web Site Layout Hierarchical Web Site Layout Used when information should be read in a specific order. Variation: Linear with links to home page Used for a site with a main index or table of contents page that links all other Web pages. Inability to move from one section of pages to another.

Webbed Web Site Layout Broad Web Site Layout Has no set organization Information does not need to be read in a specific order Has many navigation options Home page is the main index page, all pages are linked to it. Users must return to Home page before going to a different one. Navigation is time-consuming and limiting

Deep Web Site Layout Many levels of pages Forces user to spend time viewing pages that might not be useful

Content and Functionality Validate each page by running it through the W3C markup validation service Proofread! Check links and graphics Ensure accessibility and international issues are addressed Forms and interactive elements Check load times for pages Print pages to make sure all elements print correctly Testing

Usability Measure of how well the Web site allows users to accomplish tasks Testing focuses on: content, navigation, and presentation Compatibility Testing Used to verify that the Web site works with a variety of browsers and browser versions. Stress Testing Determines what happens on you site when greater numbers of users access it. Testing…Testing…

Implementation Actual publishing of the Web pages to a Web server Check pages again to make sure links and graphics are still working Maintenance Updates should not compromise the site’s integrity and consistency Don’t allow content to become stale, outdated, or include links to pages that are no longer there. Implementation and Maintenance

Log File that lists all the pages that have been requested from the Web Site. Number of visitors, browser types/versions, connection speeds, usage patterns. Maintenance…
