1 Publishing and Maintaining a Website
Publishing on the World Wide Web - TMD2073

2 Introduction Web site must be tested to make sure all the elements work as intended, accomplishes the site plans stated goals and objectives, and the content satisfies the target audience’s need. After that the web site is ready to be publish to a Web server to make it available to the audience. Once Web site is published, the will be the ongoing processes of promoting an maintaining the Web site.

3 1. Web Site Testing Before publishing to a Web server, you must test the site to identify and fix any undetected problems with navigation. Testing also identifies any problems with structure and content. There are TWO types of testing involve: Self-Testing Target Audience Testing

4 1. Web Site Testing 1. Self-Testing
During this phase, site’s structure, page layout, color scheme and other elements will be tested to ensure the Web site’s look and function as designed to confirm that all aspects of design plan are satisfied.

5 1. Web Site Testing In Self-Testing process, you should do the following: Ensure all images appear in the page layout as designed. Test all internal and external links to make sure they work properly and none are broken links. Make sure it open the correct page when clicked. Read all the text content and make sure it can be read and understand. Use different browsers and different browser versions running on different operating system platforms, including mobile device if relevant. Correct any problem that arose during testing, and retest to verify your corrections solved the issues.

6 1. Web Site Testing 2. Target Audience Testing
The second testing phase involves recruiting a small group of testers, including colleagues who are not involved in the site development, people who represent your target audience, and other interested parties, to review your Web site and test its navigation, links, and other features.

7 1. Web Site Testing Observe the testers to determine the following:
Which pages appear to appeal to them? Which pages appear to disinterest them? How much time do they spend on various pages? Which links do they or ignore? How easily do they navigate the Web site? Do they at any time demonstrate any confusion or impatience?

8 1. Web Site Testing After observing the testing, ask the testers to complete a survey. This process will help you to identify specific setting (such as browser version, screen resolution, and operating system) being used by the tester.

9 1. Web Site Testing Your survey should include questions such as the following: Did the site’s content satisfy your needs, wants, and expectations for content at the site? Was the site’s content interesting and valuable? Was it easy or difficult to navigate the site? What improvements, if any, would you suggest for the site? Would you return to the Web site and recommend the site to others?

10 2. Web Site Publishing To make Your Web site available to the audience, you must publish it to a live Web server. Publishing your site to a live server involves acquiring server space and uploading all your site files.

11 2. Web Site Publishing Server Space
Web server is “an internet connected computer use to store Web Pages”. A web server runs server software that allows it to “ serve up” Web pages and their related files upon request from a browser. There are thousands of Web hosting companies offer personal or small business server space for a modest monthly fee.

12 2. Web Site Publishing Examples of Web Hosting Service in Malaysia

13 Web Site Publishing

14 2. Web Site Publishing To find the right Web Hosting service, you must get the answer for the following question: What is the monthly/ yearly fee to host a personal or commercial Web site? How much server space is allocated for the monthly/ yearly fee? What does additional space cost? What technical support is offered, and when is it available? What is the longest scheduled downtime on a monthly basis for maintenance and backup procedures?

15 2. Web Site Publishing Does the Web hosting service support for multimedia scripting languages, applets, or other elements related to your site and its pages? How are your Web site files uploaded to the server? What is the procedure for updating and republishing pages to your site? Does the Web hosting service limit the number, size, or type of files that can be upload

16 2. Web Site Publishing Uploading Web Site Folders and Files.
A web site is published when the files that make up your site are uploaded to the specified Web hosting service. You should upload the folders and folder contents such as HTML and CSS documents, images, multimedia file, and so forth. To upload your files, you might use FTP client software.

17 2. Web Site Publishing Files Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the standard protocol, or set rules for uploading and downloading files over internet. FTP is commonly used to upload files to a Web server. FTP client software is one option for uploading your Web site folders and files. FTP client software provides a user interface for transferring files, example CuteFTP, SmartFTP or FileZilla.

18 2. Web Site Publishing Example of CuteFTP for uploading folder and files into Web server.

19 2. Web Site Publishing Retesting Published Pages.
After you files have been uploaded or published to the live server, you must check the following elements on your Web site: Confirm that all images are display properly. Make certain that no broken links exist. Ensure all interactive elements, such as forms, are functioning properly.

20 2. Web Site Publishing If any changes are necessary, correct the page files on your local computer and then upload the corrected page file to the server. Skim the content, especially when it contains schedule or date information that may be sensitive.

21 3. Website Maintenance Web is dynamic environment where rapid changes in technology and visitor expectation can cause sites to quickly look out of date. Web design is continuing process and the work of developing, creating, and maintaining a Web site is never really finished.

22 3. Website Maintenance Ongoing Maintenance, Updating, and Retesting.
It is important to maintain, update, and retest your Web site elements on regular basis. It keeps the audience coming back.

23 3. Website Maintenance As part of an ongoing maintenance plan, you should do the following: Add timely content. For example, change photographs, add new content, publicize upcoming events and offer timely tips or create a frequently updated blog. Check for broken links and add new links. Include a way to get user feedback, and act on that feedback.

24 3. Website Maintenance Evaluate and implement new technologies when they can further your site’s objectives and increase its accessibility and usability. Retest site features periodically.

25 3. Website Maintenance 4 steps in maintaining and updating Web site:
Download the desired Web page from the Web server to your computer, if necessary, to work with the most current version of the page. Update the Web page. Open the Web page. Open the Web page in a browser and check the changes and the page display. If the changes and the page display are acceptable, then upload the updated page to the server, replacing the existing page.
