Overview Learning Design and LAMS Integrating LAMS with Blackboard systems LAMS at Macquarie LAMS at NTU

Introducing Learning Design Learning Design is a name given to a new field of e-learning technology Learning Design = Sequence of Collaborative Learning Activities Learning Designs can incorporate single learner content, but also collaborative tasks such as discussion, voting, small group debate, etc Potential to “wrap” a content (eg Learning Objects) with a sequence of collaborative tasks **Learning Designs can be stored, re-used, customised

Introducing LAMS LAMS is the world’s leading Learning Design system –1000s of users across 85 countries Visual “drag and drop” approach to designing activities Teacher designs activities, then “runs” then with students, and monitors their progress Applicable to all education sectors (schools, VET, HE, corporate training, adult and community learning, etc) –Eg, UK DfES/SST & JISC trials; Oxford, Cambridge, ANU, New Zealand Ministry of Education/National Library, etc LAMS released as freely available open source software by the LAMS Foundation, commercial support services provided by LAMS International Pty Ltd –Both supported by Macquarie University

Example of LAMS Authoring

Example of LAMS Student view – “Chat and Scribe”

Integrating LAMS LAMS can be integrated with Learning Management Systems such as the Blackboard and WebCT platforms Integration provides “Single Sign On” for both staff and students –No need to login twice –LAMS relies on LMS for identity and role information –Staff can choose available sequences directly from LMS –Once assigned to a course, sequences appear as URL on LMS course page, student click on URL to enter sequence, then return to course page once completed For further information, walkthroughs, code, etc, see

Macquarie Rollout of LAMS at Macquarie University over past year (Jul 05 – Jun 06) Education and Staff Support Program –LAMS training sessions (introductory and advanced) –One on one LAMS educational design advice/support –Support resources (documentation, animated walkthroughs) –LAMS Community private area for staff sharing and discussion –Student authoring in Education courses Technical Program –Integration of LAMS with WebCT (CE4) – Single Sign On –Additional grouping function (subgroups within courses) –Document recommended new features and tools

Macquarie Project outcomes –Technical integration achieved and operational –LAMS used “live” in 43 courses –LAMS accounts for 101 staff –LAMS accounts for 1,131 students –31 Centres/Departments across the university have accounts –235 sequences created by Education students –Approx sequences created were adaptations of existing sequences –15 sequences run with students were adaptations of existing sequences –Sharing of sequences through the LAMS Community Ongoing use and rollout of LAMS from Jul 06 onwards
