AILA is the international federation of … … national or regional associations of Applied Linguistics around the world. Through its member associations, 34 affiliates plus associate members, AILA currently has a membership of more than individuals worldwide who as researchers, policy makers or practitioners are active in the field of Applied Linguistics.

AILA … … was founded in The foundation of AILA was agreed upon at the International Colloquium of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nancy, France, This decision was a result of two years preparatory work and discussion, with the financial support of the Council of Europe. Originally a European initiative, AILA has become truly global over the past 40 years, including now affiliates from Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America

AILA is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) … … having FCR (Formal Consultative Relations) with UNESCO.

Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of research and practice … … dealing with practical problems of language and communication that can be identified, analyzed or solved by applying available theories, methods and results of Linguistics or by developing new theoretical and methodological frameworks in Linguistics to work on these problems. Applied Linguistics differs from Linguistics in general mainly with respect to its explicit orientation towards practical, everyday problems related to language and communication.

The problems Applied Linguistics deals with … … range from aspects of the linguistic and communicative competence of the individual such as first or second language acquisition, literacy, language disorders, etc. … … to … … language and communication related problems in and between societies such as e.g. language variation and linguistic discrimination, multilingualism, language conflict, language policy and language planning.

Mission & Activities - AILA pursues the following objectives: Actively contributing to the development of all subject areas of applied linguistics Promoting the exchange of scientific knowledge and practical experience Stimulating international cooperation Fostering language pluralism Supporting applied linguistics in developing countries

Regionalization To make the work in research and practice of AILA members more visible during the time between the triennial AILA World Congresses, AILA pursues a strategy of regionalization that aims at establishing closer international cooperation among Applied Linguists from more or less neighboring countries who are affiliated to AILA by fostering joint events, projects and publications in the respective region. AILA World Congresses Every three years … … AILA holds its international World Congress. This congress is the biggest event in Applied Linguistics, bringing together - usually more than researchers and practitioners from all areas of Applied Linguistics for five days. AILA-Europe Conference Who needs languages? Micro and macro perspectives into language education policies Jyväskylä, Finland, June 7-10, The conference is hosted by the Centre for Applied Language Studies, Department of Languages and the Language Centre at the University of Jyväskylä, and it is simultaneously the 28th Summer School of Applied Language Studies.
