Daily Science Question 2/8/2016 Write the Question A science fiction film shows an explosion in deep space, narrowly missing a spaceship full of astronauts. The blast does not touch the spaceship, but can still be heard by the space travelers on board the spaceship. Is this movie scientifically TRUE or FALSE? A) True B) False

a.Identify the characteristics of electromagnetic and mechanical waves. b. Describe how the behavior of light waves is manipulated causing reflection, refraction, diffraction, and absorption. c. Explain how the human eye sees objects and colors in terms of wavelengths. d. Describe how the behavior of waves is affected by a medium (such as air, water, solids). e. Relate the properties of sound to everyday experiences. f. Diagram the parts of the wave and explain how the parts are affected by changes in amplitude and pitch. S8P4- Elements a-f

Agenda Opening: Engineering Design Review Work Session: Inquiry Task (RRD) Closing: Thumbs up/Thumbs Down Homework: Black History Moment (Choose a scientist or inventor. Discuss their accomplishments and contributions in a one page paper; include how we still use those contributions today.

“Protecting the Mummified Troll” A mummified troll was discovered this past summer at our school and it has generated lots of interest worldwide. The principal asked us, the STEM class, to design a security system that alerts the police if someone tried to pilfer our prized possession. How can we construct a system that allows visitors to view our artifact during the day, but invisibly protect it at night in a cost-effective way?

Legacy Cycle

Opening: Grand Challenge Answer the following questions on your own. We will then comprise a list of ideas on the board during our brainstorming session. Afterwards, we will choose the top 3 points we will need to focus on during our journey to construct a security system for our troll.

Devising A Protection Plan Idea List

Work Session: Myth-Busters Video: Crime and Mythdemeanors 2

Closing: Journal Writing Write and answer the following questions in your notebook 1.How might light relate to a security system? 2.What properties of light might be relevant to answering this question? 3.Do you have a security system at home? How does it work? 4.What are some characteristics the security system must have to keep the troll safe

Items Needed 2/9/16 Textbook Interactive Notebook Daily Science Journal Pen or Pencil

Daily Science Journal 2/9/2016 Write the Question(s) List and explain three things that you learned from the Mythbusters video regarding the alarm systems presented. Which alarm system did you find to be the most useful and why?

Opening: The Electric Pickle Experiment What types of lasers can you name? 9Hcw 9Hcw

Work Session: Exploring Lasers (50 minutes) After researching your assigned laser type, you will create a PowerPoint presentation, a small film clip, or a pamphlet to present to the class. At the conclusion of the presentations, each of you should be able to select the most appropriate laser to be used in the mummified troll security system. Further, you should each understand how lights' properties in various mediums enable the system to detect movement near the troll. Laser types: helium neon laser, argon laser, ruby laser, carbon dioxide laser, oxygen iodine laser, M-THEL (mobile tactile high energy lasers),

Investigating Questions (Required) 1.Name/type of the laser 2.What does this laser look like? 3.What does the laser do? 4.How is the laser used? Why is this laser particularly useful in these scenarios. In other words, what makes it better than other lasers for that particular function? Also, what makes the laser you researched unique compared to the other lasers you learned about? 5.How has this laser affected inventions and innovations with other technologies?

Closing: Presentations If you are not presenting, you need to choose 2 presentations to complete the Laser Research form
