Los países hispanohablantes

 Please take the pre-test on the location of the Spanish-speaking countries in the world.  We will grade each other’s tests when we are finished.

 We will now fill out the first parts of a KWL CHART that will help us figure out what we KNOW and what we WANT TO LEARN.

What are we learning today?  By the end of the lesson today, I will be able to demonstrate that I can: ◦ Talk about the history of the Spanish language and about how important it is today. ◦ Name the Spanish-speaking countries ◦ Identify the Spanish-speaking countries on a map ◦ Identify the flags and colors of the flags of all Spanish-speaking countries  By the end of this unit you will be able to demonstrate that you can: ◦ Identify specific aspects of the Spanish-speaking countries including currency, food and flag of the country through a poster board and presentation

 History-Where it came from ◦ The language known today as Spanish comes from a dialect of spoken Latin that developed in the north-central part of the Iberian Peninsula in what is now northern Spain. ◦ Spanish colonial period: between 1492 and 1898  Spaniards migrated from Spain to the different new lands they had conquered  Along with people, the Spanish brought their culture, food and language.  This created a large Spanish speaking empire and several multiracial populations ◦ The culture and language of Spanish speakers continues to grow today.

 Among native speakers, Spanish is the 2 nd most spoken language in the world ◦ Today, between 450 and 500 million people speak Spanish  Around 360 million in Hispanic America  Around 40 million in Spain  Over 34 million in the United States  There are also smaller Spanish-speaking groups in Canada, northern Morocco, Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara and the Philippines, as well as in many other places around the world, particularly large cities in Western Europe and Australia.

United States Equatorial Guinea

 By the end of the lesson today, I will be able to demonstrate that I can: ◦ Talk about the history of the Spanish language and about how important it is today. ◦ Name the Spanish-speaking countries ◦ Identify the Spanish-speaking countries on a map ◦ Identify the flags and colors of the flags of all Spanish- speaking countries  Show me “thumbs-up” if you think that you can do these things, show me “thumbs-sideways” if you think you can do these things with a little help. Show me “thumbs-down” if you can’t do these things at all

 Tomorrow: ◦ You will be put into partners and will learn about an exciting project that you will do on the Spanish speaking cultures together. This project will help you achieve this goal:  To be able to identify specific aspects of the Spanish- speaking countries including the currency, food and flag of the country through a poster board and presentation ◦ We will go through how to use the computers to do research and complete the poster board assignment. ◦ With any time left over, you will get a chance to start on your project

 Please remember that your signed parent letter is due Friday  Please remember that your parent “culture” interview and write-up are due Monday
