2 Where does Spanish come from? ¡España! (SPAIN!)

3 Where does Spanish come from? During the Middle Ages, Spanish developed in the Castile region of Spain which is why it is sometimes called “castellano.” Spanish was greatly influenced by different dialects from the Iberian peninsula, as well as Latin and Arabic. Lucky for us, Spanish has much in common with English because they are both LATIN-influenced languages.

4 How did Spanish leave Spain? Spanish was first brought to the Western Hemisphere (the Americas and the Caribbean) 5 centuries ago by Spanish explorers and colonists. Most of the explorers and colonists came from southern Spain, bringing with them accents from Andalusia.

6 Where is Spanish spoken in the world today? Las Islas Caribeñas (El Caribe) Cuba, la República Dominicana, Puerto Rico

10 Why is Spanish an important language in the United States? The U.S. has the 2nd largest Spanish-speaking population in the world! Over 48 million residents of the U.S. use Spanish as their primary language. Major cities in the U.S. with large Spanish- speaking populations are: –New York City-- Chicago –Miami-- Phoenix –Los Angeles-- Houston

11 How will knowing Spanish help you in your future? Learning Spanish will actually help you with your English! Knowing Spanish will look excellent on a college application. Speaking more than one language makes you a better candidate when looking for a job. Knowing Spanish will open up doors to many potential opportunities to travel, meet new people, and understand cultures different than your own.
