6-2.1Summarize the characteristics that all organisms share (including the obtainment and use of resources for energy, the response to stimuli, the ability to reproduce, and process of physical growth and development). EQ: What are the characteristics of all living things?

What separates living organisms from non-living things? ALL living things must: 1.obtain and use resources for energy 2. Respond to Stimuli 3. Reproduce 4. Grow and develop Non-Living things cannot do the above 4 things.

1. How do organisms obtain their energy? 1)All organisms must have food, oxygen and water to function. A. Plants make their own food through photosynthesis. B. Plants are autotrophs since they make their own food. C. Animals are consumers. They must find their food. D. Animals are heterotrophs since they must consume their food. 2) Energy is release from food in animals through respiration.

2.How is stimulus defined? Stimulus: any change in an organism’s environment that will cause the organism to react. Environmental Stimuli include changes in: – a. amount of light – b. temperature – c. sound – d. amount in water – e. amount of space – f. amounts or types of food – g. other organisms present What are examples of Stimuli?

2. How is response defined? A response is the reaction to the stimulus. Stimuli: touching hot stove Response: quickly moving hand away and yelling. Stimuli: hearing the bell ring Response: stand up, pick up your books and leave What are examples of Stimuli and response?

3. How do organisms reproduce? Organisms reproduce to produce offspring. There are 2 types of reproduction. – 1) Asexual Reproduction: a process than only involves one parent AND the offspring is IDENTICAL to the parent. – 2) Sexual Reproduction: Involves 2 parents. a. The Egg (female sex cell) and the Sperm (male sex cell) combine to make an offspring that is DIFFERENT from both parents.

Sexual Reproduction Draw this………

4. How do organisms grow and develop? Energy is required to grow and develop. 1)Growth is the process where an organism become larger. ex: you getting taller 2) Development is the process where the organism become more physically complex. ex: a baby rolling over or learning to walk. DRAW IN NOTEBOOKS

What are the 4 characteristics that all organisms share? 1) Energy 2) respond to stimuli 3) reproduce 4) grow and develop
