Short Term International Exchange & Research Opportunities Randy Kluver Texas A&M University

The scenario Would love opportunity for international posting, but cannot move indefinitely Don’t want to give up tenure or tenure-track position Teaching requirements Family obligations Short-term opportunities can provide some ability to generate key collaborative networks or gain regional knowledge, without stepping out permanently Short term options can be as short as two weeks, but can be as long as a year Some have opportunities for multiple short term overseas stays

Ways to make it happen Institutional resources: Check with International relations/programs office (often a Vice president/ vice provost level) or database of agreements Institutional partnerships (usually don’t provide funding, but sometimes do) Build upon existing university commitments/connections US programs Fulbright Other forms of research or foundation funding International programs (a sampling) EurAxess China India Networks/Consortiums (e.g. Universitas 21, UC Mexus) Others….

Fulbright Scholar Program Fulbright is the single largest opportunity for US-based scholars to gain international experience Multiple disciplines Locations around the world Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Provides approximately 800 teaching and/or research grants to U.S. faculty & experienced professional in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. (2-12 months) Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Program The NEXUS Program brings together a network of junior scholars, professionals and mid- career applied researched from the U.S., Brazil & other Western Hemisphere nations for a series of 3 seminar meetings & a Fulbright exchange experience. (2 years) Fulbright Distinguished Chair Awards Comprises approximately forty distinguished lecturing, distinguished research and distinguished lecturing/research awards ranging from three to 12 months. Candidates should be eminent scholars and have a significant publication and teaching record. (3-12 months)

Fulbright Scholar Program Fulbright Specialist Program Promotes linkages between U.S. scholars and professionals and their counterparts at host institutions overseas. (2-6 weeks) Fulbright International Education Administrators Program (IEA) Assists U.S. international education professionals and senior higher education officials create empowering connections with the societal, cultural and higher education systems of other countries. (2 weeks) Fulbright Community College Administrators Seminar in the Russian Federation Brings senior American community college administrators to Russia for meetings and events with their Russian counterparts. (2 weeks) Fulbright-Fogarty Postdoctoral Awards Established to promote post-doctoral research in public health in resource- limited settings. (3-12 months)

EU Program: EurAxess pan-European initiative supporting researchers wishing to pursue their research careers in Europe or stay connected to Europe. Main focus: international mobility and career development of individual researchers Networking tool for researchers based in North America (US and Canada) iformation on job vacancies and funding opportunities in Europe (MSCA, ERC, etc.) Promotional activities – events, workshops, seminars, career fairs Website, newsletter, social media (LinkedIn, Facebook) First point of contact before moving to Europe (link to EURAXESS Service Centers)

Country-specific programs A number of individual nations sponsor programs to facilitate higher ed mobility, for the purposes of: Enhancing research capacity in that country Creating programs that utilize specific resources (eg, US presidential libraries) Create better understanding of the host nation What it takes: Specific research objectives in that country Usually better off if you already have relationships with researchers in the destination country Varying levels of language requirements and levels of support Examples:

Germany: Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst DAAD offers grants for one to three months in all academic disciplines to scholars at US and Canadian institutions of higher education to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany. Grants are awarded for specific research projects and cannot be used for travel only, attendance at conferences or conventions, editorial meetings, lecture tours or extended guest professorships. Only for US or Canadian researchers Requires German language ability

China: Visiting Program for Young Sinologists Initiated by the Ministry of Culture of China and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Opportunities for partnership with prominent Chinese academic, cultural and educational institutions, organizations, enterprises, scholars and artists. Program Description: 50 to 60 participants per year Two terms, Each term lasts 21 days Group activities and individual seminars No Chinese language skills required Research Topics: Contemporary China & the World Chinese humanities & social studies Inheritance & development of Chinese culture

Confucius Institute China Studies Program Offered through Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) Open to any US-based scholar (although would probably help to have sponsorship of a local CI) Opportunities: “Understanding China” Visiting Scholar to China Serves to support teachers, researchers, and postdoctoral scholars with the credentials of assistant professor (or equivalent) and above from foreign universities and academic institutes to undertake research with Chinese researchers in China. (2 weeks – 6 months) “Understanding China” Short-term Visit Serves to support senior officials from government, education and culture, non-governmental organizations and business. (2 weeks – 2months)

India: American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship Competition A cooperative, non-profit organization of seventy-eight American colleges and universities that supports the advancement of knowledge and understanding of India, its people, and culture.
