Behavioral Health Policy and Advisory Council Facilitated Collaboration to Build Understanding and Group Effectiveness Session 1: Thursday, February 4, 2016

Introduction Design4Change: Guiding Social Sector Innovation  Inspired by people who come together to mobilize talent and resources to address civic and social challenges  Change Management, Mission & Resource Alignment, Stakeholder Analysis & Facilitation, Leadership Development We provide thoughtful facilitation to support multi-stakeholder program design and consensus building. We conduct board, staff and constituency facilitation – retreats, board meetings, senior team collaborations, and open meetings. Design4Change |

Welcome and Overview Meeting Framework and Norms  Council members as participants, guests as observers  Respectful of different communication styles and varying levels of comfort with group work  Take care of yourself – stand up, walk around, take breaks as needed  Cell phones and electronics are silenced and put aside  Patience, a growth mindset, and a willingness to learn will make this process most meaningful Design4Change |

Welcome and Overview Goals for BHPAC Facilitation  Reconnect Council members to common purpose  Improve understanding among Council members about each other and constituencies represented  Establish group norms to guide the Council’s work for a strong future Design4Change |

Welcome and Overview Goals for Today:  We will: improve understanding, try new ways of thinking about old challenges, get to know one another better, move outside of our comfort zones, and have some fun!  We will not: make decisions, resolve specific conflicts, or establish new tasks or goals. Design4Change |

Checking In Guiding Question:  What word best describes how you are feeling this morning? Design4Change |

Context: Colorado’s Behavioral Health Environment Design4Change |

Stepping Back: Why am I here? Guiding Question:  What inspired you to join the Behavioral Health Policy and Advisory Council? Design4Change |

Council Effectiveness: Themes from Climate Survey Three Main Themes:  We are silo-ed between prevention, treatment and recovery and lack mutual understanding of the challenges and opportunities influencing these segments of behavioral healthcare delivery.  We lack a clear understanding of Council’s authority – what does our “advisory” role mean about what OBH does or does not do with our work?  We are a very diverse and committed group – how can we better leverage these important assets in our work together? Design4Change |

 Recovery Improving and expanding the availability of recovery support services; includes topics such as peer specialist/recovery coach workforce development, funding for peer and family run organizations, support groups, etc.  Prevention Prevention of substance use disorders among both youth and adults; includes research and analysis on trends to determine most promising strategies.  Treatment Access to and funding of clinical mental health and substance use treatment, including making recommendations based on working in the field. Building Understanding Design4Change |

A Gallery Walk: How it Works Gallery Walk – Building Understanding Across Recovery, Prevention and Treatment  Divide in to three groups: Recovery, Prevention and Treatment  Designate 1 person to facilitate and chart ideas  Chart as many responses or ideas to the following question: What would we most like others to know about our area of focus?  10 minutes to brainstorm, discuss and chart ideas  Designate 2 people to “host” at your charts  When time is up, take a gallery walk – visit your fellow groups to learn more about their responses – 10 minutes Design4Change |

Gallery Walk Part Two Gallery Walk – Building Understanding Across Recovery, Prevention and Treatment  Return to your home group  10 minutes to share responses to the following: What were the most important things I learned about the work of my fellow Council members?  Facilitator/chart writer record ideas from their team.  Go-round to Recovery, Treatment and Prevention - share out major take-aways Design4Change |

Debrief Come Back Together as a Full Group Design4Change | RecoveryPreventionTreatment

Debrief Guiding Question:  What word best describes how you are feeling at the end of this session? Design4Change |

Next Steps The March Council Meeting  Clarifying needs for additional understanding about Council’s role and authority  Working towards a BHPAC Statement of Purpose  Working towards BHAPAC Statement of Group Norms Design4Change |
