Quick Poll – Who am I talking to?

Session Outline Meet your Presenter Session Goals Your Experiences Online Things to Consider when Designing a Course A Framework for Development Discussion and Questions

Meet your Presenter

Session Goals I hope you leave the session today with: A clearer picture of what shape your course development could take A couple of ideas on how to get started with blended and online development

Your Experiences Online Post a 5 word (or less) summary of your experience as either a learner or instructor in online or blended courses by writing on this slide, typing in the chat, or noting it on a scrap piece of paper. For example: “Lots of discussion forum conversations” or “Watched some videos”.

Things to Consider when Designing a Course What has worked really well in the past in this course? Where would you like to try something different with this course?

A Framework for Development PDPIE framework. UBC wiki: Developed by Afsaneh Sharif.

Planning Develop a schedule Define your team and talk to everyone Define: Who are your learners? What do you want learners to know, do and value by the end of the course? How will you know if your learners have achieved your outcomes? Is there a quality assurance process in place? How will you receive and action on feedback?

Planning MonthAprilMayJuneJulyAugustSeptemberOctoberNovemberDecember January - April StageYear Planning (Analyze) Design and Development Production (Develop) Beta Testing (Evaluate) Implementation Evaluation

Design and Development Strategies: How will you prepare learners to achieve your outcomes? How and when will learners interact with each other and with you? Content: Research, remix, develop Mix it up! Meet with your team, get some feedback

Design and Development

Production What technology tools support your strategies and your learners’ achievement of your outcomes? Is your technology choice usable and accessible? What training may be needed by you or your learners to use it? Bring everything together

Production

Implementation Meet with your team: Are the supports in place for everyone (instructor and learners)? Ensure everyone’s responsibilities are clearly laid out If you are instructing, consider keeping a log or journal of your experience Consider having a peer provide feedback during implementation Collect student feedback during implementation if you planned for it

Evaluation Collect student feedback Collect peer feedback Reflect on the instructor experience Meet with your team Make a plan to action on your feedback and reflection

Discussion Which of the stages of the framework do you think you have the most experience or comfort with? Write on this slide or type in the chat. (Planning, Design & Development, Production, Implementation, or Evaluation)

Discussion Which of the stages of the framework would be most challenging for you if you were developing a course by yourself? Why? Write on this slide or type in the chat. (Planning, Design & Development, Production, Implementation, or Evaluation)

Discussion Think back to your 5 word summaries from the beginning of the presentation. Would following a process like the one outlined today help you to create a positive online learning experience?

Thank you!
