PEACE CORPS GUATEMALA APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY TEAMING WITH HEALTHY SCHOOL

THE STATISTICS OF MORTALITY IN GUATEMALA ACUTE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS, PARASITES, AND INTESTINAL ILLNESS TOP ILLNESSES

GOOD HYGIENE HABITS REDUCE ILLNESS **WASH HANDS BEFORE EATING AND AFTER LATRINE USE **USE THE LATRINE **WASH UTENCILS WELL **CLEAN FOODS PROPERLY

MAJOR CAUSE OF INFECTION IS SELF CONTAMINATION BY NOT WASHING HANDS

APPROPRIATES STRUCTURES FOR WASHING HANDS AND LATRINE USE

Most schools do not have proper facilities

Providing proper facilities and hygiene education are the solution

Many present facilities result in more contamination

Proper facilities break the cycle of infection

Good designs to rid schools of contaminated water

Septic tanks and drain fields protect school children Water in and water out. Water in and water out.

Absorption pits for waste water where land is scarce

Shortages of water inhibit good hygiene

TECNOLOGÍA APROPIADA School hand washing station and rain storage tank

Rain storage tanks under basketball courts to save space

FERRO-CEMENTO 2000 Liter tanks for homes

10-20,000 liter Ferro-Cement tanks for school health programs 10-20,000 liter Ferro-Cement tanks for school health programs

Egg shaped tanks for areas with no water systems 8,000 LITROS.

TANQUE DEL HUEVO (Egg Shaped Tank)

Rope Pumps (BOMBA DE LAZO) for shallow wells in areas with good ground water

Pumps and tanks provide water to promote good hygiene and better health

Small economic pump systems distribute water properly to school facilities

Typical school latrine in communities with few resources

Confining human waste is the number one goal of a healthy invironment

Simple, economic latrines protect families

Smoke in the kitchen is a major health hazard

Reducing smoke in the kitchen reduces upper respiratory illness Reducing wood consumption saves forests

Appropriate and economical designs

Hot water heating for showers and better hygiene

Clean school kitchens for food preparation

Instruction in safe chlorine use

Hygiene activities to support learning

Topographic studies to assist villages with proposals for water systems

Inspection of water systems to prevent contamination

Peace Corps Appropriate Technology and Healthy Schools team up with Agua Para La Salud to combat the cycle of infection
