Volker Gärtner, EUMETSAT VLab Co-Chair EUMETSAT Status Report VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

EUMETSAT objectives The primary objective is to establish, maintain and exploit European systems of operational meteorological satellites. A further objective is to contribute to the operational monitoring of the climate as well as the detection of global climatic changes. Furthermore, environmental issues which drive or are driven by meteorological conditions are considered. VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

EUMETSAT Polar System Status –The EUMETSAT Polar System performance is excellent and all Instruments are in an operational state since the start of Routine Operations in May 2007 –The health status of Metop-A Satellite has been reviewed and launch dates for Metop-B and Metop-C adjusted accordingly –With good confidence an extension of the operational lifetime of Metop-A by one year can be anticipated –The new launch period for Metop-B is April to June 2012 and for Metop-C October to December 2016 –The EPS Ground System is prepared for the operations of two Metop Satellites simultaneously VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

Providing data for ocean climate monitoring: Jason-2 (EUMETSAT, CNES, NASA and NOAA) Jason-2 provides essential data on the mean sea level (ocean altimetry). Jason-2 extends mean sea level observations beyond TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 and completes two decades of high-precision altimetry observations. Follow-on mission studies are currently done by EUMETSAT in cooperation with NOAA to establish the basis for an Ocean Surface Topography Constellation. VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

4 observation missions: - Combined Imager: 16 channels - Infra-Red Sounder - Lightning Imager -3-axis stabilised satellites Class 3-ton MTG MSG MOP/MTP 1 observation mission: -MVIRI: 3 channels -Spinning satellite 800 kg 3 observation missions: - SEVIRI: 12 channels - GERB - Rapid Scanning (~2008) - Spinning satellite Class 2-ton Chemistry UVN Mission coordinated with ESA for implementation via GMES Sentinel 4 Meteosat Third Generation (MTG): => Continuity and Improvements of EUMETSAT Services VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

 EUMETSAT training courses, workshops and seminars are essential activities that transfer knowledge and help build capacity (not only in Meteorology).  Modern teaching methods (blended courses / e-learning & classroom course) together with a new course management system (e.g. Moodle) are used. EUMETSAT’s Training Approach VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

Now the focus is more on web content, distance learning lectures, “blended learning” courses, with maximum use of the Internet because:  more training resources (libraries) put on the web that can be easily integrated into courses.  “blended learning” courses (based upon largely virtual classrooms) can be accessed by more persons.  there are new delivery tools such as CENTRA and ELLUMINATE.  online training events (e.g. dust week in March 2010) with recordings.  all regions of the globe can be reached via the Internet. New Learning Methods VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010

 EUMETCAL and EUMeTrain (in Europe)  WMO (Virtual Laboratory) and CoEs  Bilateral Cooperation Partners (e.g. NOAA and COMET, Russia (Moscow & St. Petersburg), China (Beijing and Nanjing)  International Working Groups of CEOS and GEO To optimize the training efforts regionally and globally EUMETSAT aligns its training efforts with those of partner Organisations: International Cooperation VLMG-5, Beijing, 12 – 14 July 2010
