LESSON OBJECTIVES 1.Label and identify the major structures that make up a typical plant cell. 2.Describe what these structures do. 3.Name and describe how 2 specialised plant cells are adapted for their job.

Plant Cells Cell wall made of cellulose which strengthens the cell and gives it support. Chloroplasts, found in all the green parts of the plant. They are green because they contain chlorophyll. They absorb light energy to make food by photosynthesis. Sap filled vacuole is a space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap, which is important for keeping the cells rigid to support the plant.

MINI PLENARY Question 4 1.Controls the cell 2.Stores water and mineral ions 3.Makes glucose by photosynthesis 4.Controls what enters and leaves the cell What is the function of the chloroplast?

MINI PLENARY Question 5 1.Supports and protects the cell 2.Stores water and mineral ions 3.Controls the cell 4.Controls what enters and leaves the cell What is the function of the cell wall?

MINI PLENARY Question 6 1.Supports and protects the cell 2.Controls what enters and leaves the cell 3.Controls the cell 4.Keeps cell rigid to support the plant What is the function of the sap vacuole?

LESSON OBJECTIVES 1.Label and identify the major structures that make up a typical plant cell. 2.Describe what these structures do. 3.Name and describe how 2 specialised plant cells are adapted for their job.

SPECIALISED CELLS How many different specialised cells can you name in plants.

Examples of Specialised Cells Animal Muscle cell Nerve cell White blood cell Red blood cell Ovum (egg cell) Fat cell Sperm Ciliated epithelial cell Plant Leaf palisade cell Root hair cell Guard cell Xylem cell

PLANT CELLS ? LEAF PALISADE CELLS PHLOEM AND XYLEM CELLS ROOT CELLS GUARD CELLS

Palisade Cell Designed for Photosynthesis Found in the top of a leaf Tall and has a large surface area to absorb water and minerals. Packed with chloroplasts to help make plant food. Nucleus Chloroplasts

Root Hair Cell Designed for absorbing. Thin cell wall makes it easy for minerals to pass through. Has a large surface which helps it to absorb water and minerals. Found in a plant root. Vacuole Cell membrane thin cell wall
