C5305 – WASTE WATER AND WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING TOPIC 3.0 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

COMPONENTS IN WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

OBJECTIVES : To know the function of each valve and its location in water distribution system VALVES Are used in the distribution system for different purposes To control the flow of water, to release or to admit the air, to regulate pressure, etc.

TYPES OF VALVE Stop/ Gate Butterfly Scour Air Non Return Ball Altitude Pressure Relieve Pressure Sustaining Constant Flow

Stop valve - to stop the flow of water rather than to regulate its flow - to control water flow rate , pressure and to stop water flow.

Butterfly valve - for measuring a flow rate of a fluid flowing through the butterfly valve. - Used at hydroelectric station and sewerage joints.

- also called the ‘wash out valves, or ‘blow off valves’. Scour valve - also called the ‘wash out valves, or ‘blow off valves’. - provided at every depression and dead end to drain out the waste water or sediment.

Air release valve - Used at every summit of rising mains, at every change of gradient - for releasing the air from the main which collects at these places and often blocks the passage of water

Reflux or non-return or check valve - to prevent the water running back through the pump in case sudden failure of prime movers - placed near the pump to protect the pump from excessive back pressure.

Ball valve - controlling propellant flow and feed pressure to the propellant tanks. - perform a quarter turn on/off or modulating function.

Altitude valve - controls the level of a tank. It will remain open while the tank is not full and close when the tanks reaches its maximum level. - The opening and closing of the valve requires no external power source (electric, pneumatic, or man power), it is done automatically.

Pressure-reducing valve - automatically reduces the pressure from the water supply main to a lower, more sensible pressure. - Installed in series directly after the water meter in homes, commercial buildings, and manufacturing plants.

Sustaining pressure valve - sustain the preset maximum working pressure upstream when installed in water supply areas - most suitable for applications such as controlling and sustaining back-pressure in a chilled/hot water circulation system

Constant flow valve - to maintain a constant preset flow, even if the differential pressure changes.

C5305 – WASTE WATER & WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM POP QUIZ 1) Name the picture below Namakan gambar di bawah a) __________________ b) ____________________ 2) Write the valve name that suits with the function given below. Tuliskan nama injap yang sesuai dengan fungsi yang dinyatakan di bawah. - provided at every depression and dead end to drain out the waste water or sediment. - also called the ‘wash out valves, or ‘blow off valves’ ______________________________ Answer: Stop valve Ball valve 2) Scour valve
