The General History of Virginia by John Smith Events in the Story

1. The ships depart and colonists experience many hardships (illness, starvation, exhaustion from hard work in summer heat…)

2. The colony’s president tries to run away. A new president is named, but he isn’t any good at organizing.

3. Smith takes over management of the colony. He assigns men to clear the area and build houses.

4. Smith and his men go exploring and searching for food. While he is away, the jealous conspire against him. Smith puts down the rebellion, goes back to exploring, and is attacked by Natives. Although the rest of his men are killed, Smith is taken prisoner.

5. When Powhatan, the Indian leader, decides to have Smith killed, Powhatan’s daughter Pocahantas saves Smith.

6. Smith impresses the Indian chief who adopts him. Then Smith returns to Jamestown accompanied by friendly Indians who receive presents from Smith.

7. The jealous in Jamestown conspire to have Smith killed. Smith defeats this plot as well. Pocahontas later helps the settlers by giving them food during a hungry winter.

Moral of the Story God and John Smith will protect all at Jamestown
