Reading Paper Some of the questions are: shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions); shorter, open response items longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding. Questions are worth 1, 2 or 3 marks. For 3 mark questions we encourage children to PEE or PEEL

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling English grammar, punctuation and spelling – Paper 1 comprises 40 to 50 short-answer questions covering grammar, punctuation and vocabulary, taking 45 minutes; Paper 2 is a spelling test with 20 questions, taking approximately 15 minutes.

Extension Papers There are no extension (level 6) papers this year. The questions on the papers vary in difficulty and will allow those pupils who are working above year 6 expectations to achieve a higher total score.

Assessment without levels There are no levels now in schools. Currently there is no real guidance on how the SATs papers will be graded (this will not be decided until after the tests have been sat). We do know that there will be a points score awarded from the papers and that roughly 100 points will show the expected standard for a year 6 pupil.

Preparing in school Weekly practise of previous SATS papers Continuous Assessment Weekly SPaG Lesson Weekly extra writing lesson set by ability Grammar Term and Spelling Rule of the Week Whole School Approach-Literacy Across the Curriculum – new spelling system in place Booster Classes and progress sets Revision Guide given to all pupils purchased by the school

How You Can Help Encourage children to read regularly and widely. Show interest in what they are reading-ask a range of questions to get them to think more deeply about what they are reading. Support with homework and weekly Reading Diary Tasks – homework club is available to all year 6 for revision purposes. Discuss the Grammar Term of the Week with them-this can be found each week on the home page of the Learning Platform. Encourage children to look up new words in the dictionary or thesaurus Reassure that they just have to try their best

THANK YOU
