Historic Context 19 th Century – Jews from Russia and Poland escaping persecution – Irish escaping rural Ireland. 1930s-40s – Jews and Poles – WWII s – Caribbean workers invited to help rebuild post-war Britain. 1950s-60s – Asians from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh escaping poverty. 1970s – east Africa’s (Uganda) escaping persecution. Vietnamese – War. 1980s-90s – eastern European refugees from Romania and former Yugoslavia. 2000s – economic migration from the EU.
